Challenge yourself to another level at the Jackson County 50-50. Very steep topography rewards you with fantastic vistas along the ridgetops in Jackson-Washington State Forest. Each lap will take you around two different and beautiful lakes and to the highest point in Jackson county.
Though the course is rugged, Pyoca Camp, Conference, and Retreat Center balances that out with warm, dry places to eat, sleep, shower, and gather before and after the race. We’ve partnered with the camp to bring you affordable weekend-long packages including full meals on Friday night, Saturday post-race, and Sunday recovery breakfast.
The course is a 10-mile loop with approximately 1,600 feet of vertical gain per lap. The trail is a mix of double-track (fire road style) trail and single-track narrow trail. About 3/4 mile of the course is on a paved road within the State Forest. Aid stations will be located every 3-5 miles along the route, and each lap will pass within feet of Pyoca’s lodge building; offering warmth, restrooms, and access to your personal stash of food, clothing, and other needs.
Your entry fee also includes: Post-race food (soup, sandwiches, etc), access to post-race showers, aid stations stocked with liquids and energy snacks, and more. Ultra-distance runners only will receive choice of: custom Headsweats reversible beanie or touch-screen friendly gloves, a finisher medal, and race awards for overall and age group top three.
RULES & DETAILS:
The 50 mile race is five laps. The 50k will run a one mile loop around beautiful Pyoca Lake before starting three full laps. Participants may not “drop down” to a shorter distance category during the race.
One un-registered “pacer” runner is allowed to accompany you on your final lap only. Any other runners must be registered.

The good: the race is quite well organized. I received a reasonable amount of messages from the race director, the course was well marked, the aid stations well stocked, one of the best organized races I have been a part of. The scenery is great. The entire run is in a forest away from cars, completely in the trees the entire time. There are multiple scenic lakes to run by as well. Because it’s December, there aren’t leaves on the trees so you can see for miles when on top of hills. As far as value, this race is a tremendous value. The race, two nights lodging, dinner the night before the race and after, as well as breakfast after was only $140. I got WAY more than $140 worth. Getting a beanie was nice, especially for a December race.
All runners should note this course is quite hilly. I thought Indiana would be flat, but this course has legitimate hills that require walking. Also, if you stay in the lodging provided, it is a super convenient location. You will be sleeping about one minute from the start line. You do need to bring a pillow, sheets, blankets, and a towel though. Not a big deal if you drive to the race, but for people like me who flew to the race, it can be somewhat inconvenient.
The only aspect I would change, and it’s minor, was the race shirt was from two years ago. It’s a cool shirt and I plan on wearing it. I wish it would have had the date from the year I actually ran the race. It’s minor though as I was quite pleased with the entire experience.

Let me just start by saying…. that 10 miles was no joke. I signed up on a whim with a friend who was doing the 50k, I didn’t look at the elevation or anything (big mistake, lol). holy hills. It was so much fun though. We didn’t go fast, I met up with someone who had never done a trail run before, so I stuck with her. Good thing I did, too, since the trail was leaf-covered a majority of the time. Straight up, straight down. It was truly an adventure. It was very pretty, the aid stations were awesome (full size candy bars!), my only sadness was that the fun run didn’t get a medal. Really nice set up and a beautiful area, just be prepared to run up and then up a little farther before you go back down.
