This is a 5K race located in Canton, MA about 30 minutes south of Boston. It’s a bit far from me as I live 30 minutes north of Boston but I was on call this weekend and this race starts at 11:30am so it’s late enough for me to go in the hospital and round and then run the race. This race as the name implies raises money for the Irish Cultural Centre. Really my only production complaint was there was no pre-race email except the generic refer your friends runsignup ones. However the website was updated and had all the info. Parking was easy at the Cultural Center. The race is medium sized for a local 5K with around 300 runners. It started with both the American and Irish anthems and we went. This is a very nice race that encouraged participants of all abilities including walkers. I love this as this is not always the case in New England. As a result even though I am not very fast (though I was much faster than Friday) there were a bunch of people at my pace and about 100 people behind me. The course is very flat. It is sort of Y shaped and on closed roads. The area around the cultural centre is pretty but most of it is through business parks and not scenic though the race can’t really help this. There were 2 aid stations with water which is great for a 5K especially as the late start made it a bit hot. I was excited to finish under 40 minutes since I was still battling a cold a bit and even more excited there were medals at the finish. They were tiny, generic medals but New England 5Ks hardly every get medals so I will take it. There was a very nice post race lunch with pasta, salad and bread and you also got a free drink either a beer or a soda. Overall this was a really nice, back of the pack friendly 5K with a fun after party and even a tiny medal. If this were closer to me I would definitely do it again. An hour is a bit far to travel for a 5K but I would definitely do it again if I was on call and it was such as nice race I’d consider traveling to it even if I wasn’t.
Luck of the Irish
