Iceland Extreme Triathlon braves the icy waters, races down the windy roads, and climbs the stunning mountains taking athletes back to the days of athlete versus nature, determination versus the clock, and perseverance versus self-doubt. We invite you to come along on an extreme journey that you will never forget and will reshape you as a triathlete.
A race unlike any other in a land unlike any other. Iceland, the Land of Fire and Ice offers a unique and wonderfully challenging opportunity to host one of the world’s premiere triathlons that will challenge even the most seasoned athletes. This is more than an event, it’s an adventure, a challenge, that only the bravest and mentally strong athletes dare take on. Do you have what it takes?
With a total race distance of 253km/157mi and overall ascent of 3,815m/12,500’ between the bike and run course, the Iceland Extreme Triathlon is one of the hardest triathlons on the planet. With out of this world scenery and a start time under the Midnight Sun (00:00/12:00am), the event is truly spectacular.
Athletes begin their morning with a freshwater swim in the daunting shadow of Kirkjufell, Iceland’s most famous mountain. From there they hit the road on a ride that takes them on a tour of the entire Snæfellsnes Peninsula. As if that extra long ride (205km/127mi and 2,285m/7,500’ ascent) wasn’t enough, they must then traverse an active volcano written about by Jules Verne in Journey to the Center of the Earth named Snæfellsjökull (44km/27mi and 1,530m/5,020’ ascent), to end their day and call themselves an Iceland Extreme Triathlon Finisher.
