I was looking for a 5K to run with my dad on Father’s Day in NH and it was pretty much this one. The race is located in Durham which is near the seacoast and is just under an hour drive either from my apartment in Salem or my parent’s house in Concord. I drove my dad and stayed in Concord last night. The race is at a Margarita’s restaurant near an industrial business park. There was lots of parking and race day packet pick up. I think there may have been early packet pick up but we just got the packet in the morning. We arrived about an hour before the race. I’m glad we got there early as packet pick up wasn’t very efficient and the lines got very long closer to the race. There also weren’t enough porta potties and those lines got long too. Along with bib you also got a nice but kind of plain designed tech shirt. The race started on the street in front of the restaurant and ended in the parking lot. Start could’ve used corrals or signs of where to line up. I was a bit sore from yesterday and not planning to push myself so lined up near the end but a bunch of slower people were in front and some faster people behind. Course is an out and back. It is an okay course. It is definitely a convenient course for traffic control as there were minimal intersecting street and it allowed the road to be partially closed off without affecting traffic much. As this is a fairly popular race with several hundred runners it was good to have it on closed streets. For a race like this that is probably more important factor so while it wasn’t a great course I do think it is probably the best they can make at the location. The scenery is pretty blah though industrial parks but there are some nice trees. There are a few hills but none too hard. At the finish line you get a bottle of water. There is medal which is typical for 5Ks in NH. There was great post race snacks with fruit and typical race snacks like granola bars plus lots of pastries and cookies and goodies. I was really slow but my dad was pretty fast and won his age group. The age group prizes were a variety of gift certificates but it took forever to get his prize as all the winners were rummaging through the options. Overall this was a fine race but a lot of the production could have been more efficient. Since there are limited other options I would do it again.
