The Geist Half Marathon is one of the most scenic, challenging, and best-supported half marathons in the country. The Geist Half Marathon Inc. is an Indiana non-profit corporation organized to inspire health and wellness in the children in and around the Geist Reservoir community of Indianapolis, Indiana. We believe healthy bodies contribute to healthy minds, and healthy minds result in improved student outcomes and stronger communities. Working closely with runners, walkers, and our sponsors, the Geist Half Marathon raises funds to benefit wellness and fitness programs implemented within our local schools.
The Geist Half Marathon school program is one aspect of our annual event we are most proud of. Last year, over 1,800 students competed in the actual race. Another 75,000 students were directly impacted thanks to the programs we were able to support through the generosity of our volunteers, competitors, and local sponsors. We are working to build upon this success in an effort to grow our impact on these vital programs, the overall health of our community, and the total number of students we directly and indirectly serve, support, and build into. To date, the Geist Half Marathon, Inc. has donated over $500,000 to Geist area schools.

Race swag was great, course was fine, and communication from Aprill was great, but could be better from others in the organization. Site says walker friendly, and has a 4-hour course limit, but beware those that finish close to the time limit will not get to enjoy beer and VIP amenities. They were cleaning up when we got to the beer and VIP tents even though we finished well within the time limit.

By Indiana standards, this is a hilly course, so probably not a target for PR’ing. Not a very big field of runners, and crowds are sporadic due to the nature of the course (weaving through neighborhoods and over bridges around Geist Reservoir). Going forward, as a local, it’s one that I’ll run again if I’m available, but it’s not one I’ll center my plans around.
