This race was a good value for the price. I like to mix it up between larger and smaller races and this was a great small race (as in, don’t expect a huge production but that’s not why I run – I like courses with nice scenery!). There were ~60 people running the half. Everything about the race was very smooth. Packet pick-up was quick and easy. I took off one “shoe” for swag because I always prefer technical tees over cotton, but I appreciate the long sleeve given! Medal was nice (I am collecting for all 50 states).
The race course ran frequently along the Mississippi River, through a beautiful park (I also enjoy some hills and this had a few fun ones). Aid stations were frequent and had plenty of cheering fans. My only complaint there is they only had water available. I always plan ahead and bring my own gels and was glad I did on this race. One aid station near mile 10 offered gels but at that point, I feel like that’s a little too late. Maybe offer some electrolyte drinks as well?
The other thing I felt this race was missing was a photographer. I’ll even pay for race photos! Or have a high school student volunteer and post them online. I like to document everything I do and it’s tough to take photos while you’re running.
It was pouring rain at the finish line so I decided not to stick around for the post-race pancakes, but sounded like a great idea in more ideal conditions.
