This was the inaugural Dash around Lake Kampeska, but from the fantastic organization and smooth production you would never guess that they had not managed a race here before. The field was not very large, probably 150 participants between the half and the relay, and we were very well supported by race volunteers and the local community. A great atmosphere!
The course itself offers numerous views of the lake as it circles almost all the way around. The start and finish line are in two lakeside city parks about a mile apart with busing to the start line from parking lots at the finish. Otherwise you get frequent views of the lake from between houses as almost the entire race is on roads, or road adjacent bike lanes through residential areas.
Water stops were available every two miles, and volunteers were patrolling the course to offer assistance if needed. The food spread at the end was particularly nice. The usual post race fare was supplemented with breakfast burritos and Caribou Coffee.
The presence of a pacing team was also a pleasant surprise for a race of this size leading to a fellow runner to exclaim “Wow, pacers! This is like a legitimate, professional race!”
