Cape Wrath Challenge

It is essential that every participant understands that this is quite unlike a normal road race. It is extremely challenging, including a climb of over 2,415 feet and is the most North Westerly and probably the most demanding marathon on mainland Britain. The route is extremely exposed. The logistics involved in hosting these events mean that available entries are limited and it is vital that individuals and teams register early.

Please note that in the event of high winds, the Cape Wrath ferry will not operate. In this instance, we invoke our contingency route which is still a measured course (and it could be argued equally as scenic and challenging) but run entirely on ‘landside’. We realise that this can be disappointing for runners but our ultimate responsibility is to ensuring the safety of our runners and support staff. The decision is made as early as possible and once made will not be reversed.

Assemble at the Village Hall at the time allocated to you at registration on Friday. This may be as early as 05:45 am for a 6:00 departure. You will be allocated a seat on a bus which will take you to the Kyle of Durness (referred to as Landside). You will cross the Kyle by ferry to reach the start point at Capeside. You will be given your start time in advance.

The route takes runners through some of the most spectacular wilderness in the UK to the famous Stevenson lighthouse at Cape Wrath. The route then returns to Capeside where timing is stopped for a ferry journey back across the Kyle. At Landside timing is re-started. The final stretch is from Landside to Durness Village Hall. Your spilt times are recorded on your log card by race officials and your total time will be calculated at Race HQ. SORRY – NO CARD, NO COMPLETION TIME
