This is a 5K the weekend before thanksgiving that benefits the local elementary school in the town I live in. It is a very local race and just a few minutes drive from where I live. My parents decided to join me and we had lunch and watched a movie after. It’s about 2.5 miles from where I lived so a little too far to walk so we drove. Race morning was a bit drizzly. There was plenty of parking at the school when we arrived and the gym was opened so there was a place to hang out inside before the race. There was also a nice raffle. Packet pick-up was outside and included bib, a nice but white cotton long sleeved shirt and a swag bag. It’s not the most exciting swag bag in the world but included a nice pen, a rice krispie treat and lots of coupons. I’ve done a lot of these local 5Ks for schools and this had the nicest swag of them. Race went pretty smooth. There was about 200 participants. I walked with my mom. There didn’t seem to be any indication to line up by pace but we just stayed in the back. It was chip timed with the same start/ finish. The course is through neighborhoods around the school and is nice but a bit generic. All these races have looked similar. It was mostly well marked. There was one section with a short out and back that was a bit confusing that I thought could have been marked slightly better but not big issues. The course didn’t seem to hard. A few ups and downs but no big hills. It’s always harder to gauge when walking than running though. There were lots of participants and lots of back of packers so there was always someone to follow. We were slow due to some issues my mom was having but even at our slow walking pace we weren’t last showing that this is very back of the pack friendly. No medal but that is expected in New England. There were a selection of granola bars and other snacks at the end. Overall this was a nice, little 5K to support the school and community. Especially as it is very convenient I will do it again if I am in town.
