After making our triumphant return to our downtown course, Sports Backers is excited to continue to provide you the same superior race day experience that you’ve come to expect when you run Richmond! We pride ourselves on being able to not only organize a large-scale event, but to also make our event feel tailor-made for all our participants regardless of size. From registration, to packet pick up, swag, on course entertainment, aid stations, and more, we want to make every step of your journey easy and fun. We look forward to the Allianz Partners Richmond Marathon and we want to see you at the finish!
Come run in the capital of Virginia and see for yourself why we’re a Travel + Leisure Top Destination! Each of our scenic courses showcases some of our city’s favorite attributes. With street art, river views, historic architecture, and beautiful parks, our race routes treat runners to a unique and unforgettable tour of RVA that ends with our renowned downhill finish and CoStar Post Race Party on the riverfront!
Run through scenic and historic sections of Richmond, including along and across the beautiful James River. The marathon course is great for first-timers and features some rolling hills. The marathon is USA Track & Field sanctioned and certified and is a top Boston Qualifier.
The CarMax Richmond Half Marathon takes everything we love about the full, and packs it into 13.1 miles. Sure it’s half the distance, but it’s just as fun! So what are you waiting for?! Richmond is calling!
Or get in on the race day fun with an 8K (4.97 miles) run or walk through downtown Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University. You’ll be the first on the course to experience our awesome crowd support and enthusiastic spectators.
During your race, you’ll also encounter live bands, DJs, spirit groups, and Party Zones that will offer plenty of encouragement and motivation. Need an extra burst of energy? We have you covered with junk food stops, wet wash cloths, and pickle juice (marathon and half participants only)! Once you cross the finish line, you’ll be greeted by a well-earned celebration on Brown’s Island complete with pizza and a Hardywood beer on the house!
Take some time to revel in your accomplishment, but don’t let your Richmond experience end there. Whether you’re a local or from out of town, there’s a whole city to explore. You might just decide you don’t want to leave!
Run Richmond once and you, too, will know why we’re “America’s Friendliest Marathon!”

Temporarily working in Richmond and found out about the race the night before and so I signed up for the Half Marathon. Had only 5 hours of sleep getting ready for the race at the last minute. I was stressed race day trying to figure the layout of check in etc… expecting to give out at about 2 miles in. Did not train for the race and beat my anticipated goal (2:05:??) by 10 minutes . I also ran the race in my Vibrams toe runner shoes. Love them shoes. The temperature was nice and not to humid. I think it was to hot for some people, but being from the desert southwest, it was perfect for me. Staff were so helpful and friendly the Marathon lives up to it’s name of being America’s friendliest race as far as I can tell. Definitely hope to run the full marathon next year.

It was warm (mid-70s) and humid this year, which made this a tough race. But the scenery along the river was beautiful. The volunteers at every aid station were amazing. Plenty of people handing out water and Nuun, so helpful and friendly and encouraging. Great course, wish I could have run it in seasonal weather but the volunteers along the way made a challenging day infinitely better.
Love the fleece blanket and finisher hat. Post-race party/food left a lot to be desired. Otherwise a great race.

This race hit on all fronts! This year was particularly hot and humid which made it a bit more difficult, but so many runners, spectators, enthusiastic volunteers made it a great experience. They have super cool swag including finisher items. Pizza and beer at the finish line. Gu on course as well as water and nuun at every aid station. They do have pace groups but only up until 230 for the half and 530 for the full, they definitely should work on expanding those. Generous course cut offs and encouraging all the way through to the last finishers!

The course is fairly scenic for a city race. I did not find it too hilly or difficult. There was a lot of community support and I enjoyed seeing the alcohol mile and junk food mile. My favorite was the pickle juice shot (no alcohol) at mile 10. The weather was unusually humid and I heard there was a water shortage at one of the stations (I also heard it was corrected promptly). Food at the end was good and so was the gingerbread stout! I would recommend some tents at the finish for inclement weather. Too many runners in need of shade were passing out/tossing cookies at the end

I ran this for the second time after 14 years and this race is just as well organized and run as it was before. They had all sorts of aid stations along the way for everything you could want. The wave starts were well laid out and managed. The supporters were friendly. The after party was just the right vibe of excitement but not too much for tired runners. The only thing they couldn’t control was the weather, which was warm, but they had plenty of hydration and cooling options. Would recommend this to anyone thinking of trying a half or full marathon, as well as experienced runners. I didn’t do it, but there is also a training team that helps anyone progress toward and meet their race goal that I’ve heard great things about.
Fantastic experience all around!

Without the complications of the marathon majors, Richmond brings all the fun things that big marathons have. A well executed Expo, amazing race support, tons of spectators. The course is fairly flat which makes it great for BQ/PRs. Weather wasn’t perfect this year but there’s nothing anyone can do about that one.

I have run this marathon twice, and loved it both times. It’s very well organized, with crowd support throughout the entire course. This includes cheering sections, energy gels, medic tents, running coaches (who were incredibly supportive, ran with me when I needed it most), and special stops like “junk food stops” and “pickle juice station.” Loved the medal, swag, and post race party as well. The course is beautiful as well! 10 out of 10, will be back.

Having never been a runner, I decided to try something I never thought I would do. Train for a marathon….. I considered many races within a 200 mile radius from my home and eventually set my sights on the Allianz Partners Richmond Marathon. This was 4 years ago, and I am so glad I did. The scenery alone will keep me coming back, as it seems to have it all. There was a river side portion of the route along the beautiful James River, an incredible view of the city skyline while running across the bridge, gorgeous quaint neighborhoods, parks, and a perfect combination of small hills and flat stretches. The race is very well put together, very organized and the support along the entire route are nothing short of amazing. Pickle juice stops, party zones, live bands and DJ’s, junk food stops, and water stops every 2 miles. All this, coupled with amazing cheerleaders peppered throughout the entire course, makes the Richmond Virginia Marathon the friendliest marathon in the world, and I have made it a personal goal of mine to run it every year.
Lots of fun. Well organized.

First time in Richmond and it was fantastic!!! Great crowd support, awesome swag, and a beautiful, interesting course. There are rolling hills but an amazing downhill finish to the water. Unfortunately we have a bad heatwave so a lot harder than I expected and it slowed me down. Did it with a friend for fun and not time, so it worked out fine. We stayed downtown and walked from our VRBO to and from the race. Super easy!

Due to the location of the race, race day parking is easily accessible and within walking distance of the start. There are a plethora of port a potties available for runners. The community support is strong in various parts of the course. Food, energy resources, bathrooms, water stations and medic tents are readily available to participants. The end of the race ends with a huge downhill which is very welcomed by mile 12.5!
The afterparty on the island offers various food, drinks and merchandise. Volunteers are friendly and helpful. One of the highlights is the amount of race swag given to finishers: Shirt, huge medal, BLANKET AND hat!
