Usually held in April but delayed due to Covid. Totally enjoyable road race! They did a great job the race was well organized, every odd mile markers, water/gatorade stations ever 2 miles or so. Ocean and beach views a pretty awesome climb up Torrey Pines and a great finish at La Jolla complete with live band, a beer garden and a DJ. This will not be my last race here!

The Summer Breeze is my favorite flat Brazen race. I love running by the bay or the ocean and Summer Breeze provides you with great views of the bay and the San Mateo Bridge. This is my second time running the 10k and while I did not PR I was happy with my time.

Like all Brazen races registration and packet pick up is simple and easy, you can have your packet mailed to you, pick it up at a specific sponsor location the Thursday or Friday prior to the race day or you can sign up and get your packet on race day. There is always plenty of parking at this race it just depends on how far your willing to walk to the start.

The weather was perfect with a bit of fog and cooler temps for the entire 10k run. The race as stated is pretty flat, you head out from the San Leandro Marina south towards San Lorenzo along the bay. This race is fun it draws some local onlookers who cheer you on and all your senses are in use you can hear the water and the sea birds, smell and taste the salt in the air as well as the views of the bay and the bridge. Whether it’s your 1st or 100th 10k I recommend this race. This was my favorite medal this year and as usual Brazens aid stations are well stocked, and you always get your It’s-It once you finish!

In 2015 Bad Bass 5K was my first introduction to trail running and Brazen Racing. I had only done 1 other race before a home town 4th of July road race. I was not sure I would ever really “get into” running especially in organized races. I was pretty intimidated by what I had witnessed at road races I had attended with my wife and pretty confident that this would be similar and most likely my last organized race.

Well that was 51 races ago! Since then I have done the Bad Bass 10K twice. Lake Chabot is an oasis in an urban setting providing a great background and an amazing place not just to run in but to enjoy many outdoor activities.

If you have never done a Brazen race before they make signing up for the race simple every race has 3 different price points. The closer to race day (including race day) you register the more you pay. Packet pick up also offers multiple choice. You can have your bib and race packet snail mailed, you can usually pick up your race packet at predefined location on the Thursday and Friday before the race or you can show up early on race day and pick up your bib and goodies.

The atmosphere at the Lake Chabot is always lively, there is plenty of parking available and if your there for the race parking is free. I love arriving for the Bad Bass you can usually hear the bagpipes tuning up in the background as you prep for whatever race your running. There is a convenient bag check but given the proximity of the parking to the race start you can always store your stuff back in your car.

The bagpipers play you out at the start of all 3 races (1/2, 10K & 5K) it’s a pretty cool way to start out a race. The first two miles of the 10K are on a nice shady paved trail mostly along the lake, this is to lull you into a false sense of security. As you leave the first aid station you begin to move a bit more upward for the 10K this does not stop for the next mile and half.

Your climbing on a dirt trail at least for me it’s fairly technical, plenty of rocks and pot holes to watch for as well as the steep climb, the good part is when you reach the top you hit an aid station before you have to make your way back down. Going down can be troublesome with all the rocks and places to twist your ankle at some points I slowed to a walking pace just to prevent any injury. Once you cross the single lane bridge, and hit the aid station nearby, your in the shade and travelling back to the finish.

As usual the Brazen medal and t-shirt were exceptional and every type of sugar, salty and healthy snack is available as well as the hard earned Its It.

The best thing about the Bad Bass and any Brazen race for that matter is the people the volunteers, streakers, newbies, kids even random folks just there to enjoy Lake Chabot were friendly and smiling. This is what has me coming back to Brazen races again and again. There is no attitude no worries if you’re the fastest or the slowest. Sam will be the first to tell you “take your time and enjoy the trail we will be here when you finish” its great advice!

The race is an amazing experience the 6 and 12 hour runs start at 7:00 AM. You have either 6 or 12 hours to run, walk, skip and crawl as many laps as you want around Point Pinole. At the start/finish is a running party! Tents full of people, food and refreshments for the runners and let’s not forget pickles and pickle juice.

It’s an all-around party atmosphere made for runners and the Brazen family of followers! There is also a late morning 5 & 10k as well as an late afternoon 5 & 10K for those who do not want to run the 6 hour. I do know some people participated in both.

I need to write a standard Brazen disclaimer for the snacks, aid stations, bling and t-shirts because in all Brazen style they are always grade A. 6 & 12 hour runners also get a sweatshirt.

Unfortunately, at some point in the past few weeks I have hit a wall, this was not a good race for me, I had planned to run the full 6 hours and ended up dropping out after 2 rounds one walking and one running. It was a disappointing end to an awesome event but there is always next year!

The race was fun and family orientated I usually do the Run San Ramon 4th of July race but I am streaking Brazen so had a chance to experience a new location. Registration was easy as usual picked up my bib on race day no lines. There was plenty of free parking and the race started on time. The course was simple a nice run through Concord. If your looking for a nice local 4th of July 5k that’s well organized (There was also a fun kid run available before the 5k), then I would recommend this race in Concord.

More experienced reviewers then I have provided good technical reviews of the Double Dipsea, so mine will just be a personal reflection of my race.

This was my second Double Dipsea I think when I signed up I must have forgotten how hard this race is. I can say for myself I hike most of it and run when I can. You start on in waves at Stinson Beach, my age group started at 7:52 one of the last to go. There is ample parking and the Dipsea start has a fun carnival atmosphere mixed in with foreboding. New runners ask those who have done it before “is it hard”? and the those who have run it before roll there eyes and say yes!

The first mile feels like a normal Brazen race and that where for me it becomes different with names like “Cardiac” and “insult” you can’t help but be apprehensive. I struggled through the first 3 miles taking over 45 minutes on the mostly uphill, root littered, climb hitting the first two aid stations I stopped both times drank water and cooled off. This race was warmer then last year where we had fog for the first few hours. You then get to run downhill a bit so miles 4 & 5 felt good.

Before you reach Mill Valley and the stairs you hit a single track where runners are moving both ways so its stop and go. Everyone I was around was communicative and accommodating its one of the things I enjoy about this race is how much respect and consideration people show for each other when passing. I can only say that the stairs whether your going up or down are not easy.

I reached the Mill Valley turn around at about an hour and 53 minutes, I was happy with my time refueled and headed back out. The next 7 miles took me a little bit less then 2 ½ hours. The temperature was up and around mile 10 there is a long uphill battle. It’s the first time I can remember being with 5 other people for a good 2 miles and no one said anything. The uphill was difficult, the temperature was hot and we were all tired. I was mentally looking forward to the shade and the downhill and when I reached the aid station at the top stopped for a good 3-4 minutes and tried to recover.

The last 4 miles were my hardest both of my knees started to hurt and knowing I had 16 or so more Brazen races ahead of me (I am streaking again) I decided to walk the rest of the way (its more like hiking then walking). My time was slower this year but I have no shame about it, this is a tough race. I love the Double Dipsea trail and views and the experience are amazing. They say “its not for everyone” and this year like last year I swore I will never do it again. The race was several weeks ago my knees are recovered and I am getting ready for the Brazen Dirty Dozen and somewhere in the back of my mind I hear “well it wasn’t that bad, I’ll have to try and sign up again next year .

The usual easy bib pickup you experience with Brazen races. Whether its early bib pickup or quickly getting your bib on race day. Sanborn Park is beautiful and for this race it was pretty cool whether as well. If you have never been to the park even if you’re not going to do any of the runs I would recommend checking it out. It one of those hidden places that if you never had a reason to go there you would not know about it.

This is my 3rd race at Sanborn, it’s tough no matter which race you run. I did the 10k today and honestly this is one of the most challenging of the Brazen races for me. Some of the others feel worse because of hot temperatures but this one wins hands down (besides the Double Dipsea) for climb and technically challenging train run.

You start out with a nice run into the redwoods it seems idyllic you meander to that first upward switch back I was thinking maybe it will be easier this time, ya know you have been training, running hills I feel good! Well at least for me by the ½ mile I was walking the uphill’s and running where I could. This continued for the first three miles. There is an aid station at around 1.4 I stopped got some water and continued alternating between a “fast” walk and slow jog. The trail is pretty there are redwoods and you’re in the forest for sure. You have to watch your footing plenty of rocks, tree limbs, roots and a few steps should ensure you focus on where you put your feet. I did see a couple of people being lead gingerly back to the start after twisting ankles.

At the turn around pretty much spot on at 3.1 you begin your trek back down, again you have to watch your footing, you should try and let people know your coming as well. A lot of telling people “on your right” and “thank you” felt appropriate along with letting some of the faster down-hillers pass me by. The first mile and ½ down at least its only fellow 10K’ers you run into but after you hit the aid station your now running with some of the slower 5K runners/walkers (hikers really!). So, attention to the trail was most important for me.

I finished in the top 3 in my age group so I am really pleased with my time, the refreshments were the usual high standard and the medals were awesome and slugworth! All said if your wanting a challenging and technical trail run that well done or you just want to have a great hike and a beautiful location I would highly recommend this race. Just be careful, let people know you’re coming and be respectful of your fellow hiker/walker/runners!

I picked up my bib and race packet the day before, with all Brazen races this is always an option. Race day pick up is also super easy when I cannot make it to a pre-race pickup.

I have a love/hate relationship with Point Pinole and this weekend’s Nitro scores on the positive side. The weather is always the decider for me and this Saturday we had cooler weather and some early fog that helped keep the trails from being too dusty. For me at least this course is one of the faster Brazen races its pretty flat. For the most part you run under the eucalyptus groves and in the shade with 360 degree views of San Pablo bay. I like the trails here they are not super technical and a there are a couple of sections of paved road.

I ran this with my 29-year-old son and 22-year-old daughter our 2nd race all together so it was special and we all thoroughly enjoyed the race. I recommend this race to anyone who has never done a trail race before and is looking to try it out. As I said its fairly flat, the trail is easier then many of the Brazen races available and you get to experience the care and love that goes into ever Brazen race without some of the sweat and tears The Brazen medal and the t-shirt are always worth it!

I know this was only my 5th 1/2 Marathon but it was my favorite. Packet pickup was Saturday and was nice and easy no lines only a few vendors and on the beach in Capitola, what more can you ask for. You received your white “Surfers Path” tech shirt, not my favorite color for a running shirt but it was good quality.

Race day likewise was fairly simple I stayed in Capitola and the race started at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. They had ample parking (for $15) there also seemed to be plenty of street parking for those who wanted to look for it. The 1/2, full and relay all had the same starting time and after minimal fuss and fanfare we started on time at 7:00 AM. I was so happy that it was foggy at start time it could not have been nicer morning to run.

The 1/2 Marathon is an out and back you go along the coast from Santa Cruz to Capitola and then back. I heard a few people mention hills before the race but there was nothing noticeable maybe 25 – 30 ft climb but nothing I would call a hill. The views were great and I found some beaches between Santa Cruz and Capitola that I did not know existed. The aid stations offered water, sports drinks and GU, I lost count how many there were but it was plenty. We were cheered on by plenty of locals as we went through the neighborhoods along the coast and through Capitola I think the early hours may have limited the amount of viewers

The finish was in the sand on the beach not too far past the Beach Boardwalk, the finisher medal was nice. For me this was my PR 1/2 that I had been training for so I could not have been happier with the race. We spent the rest of the day relaxing and watching the surfers at one of the new beaches I noticed on our run. I am sure I will return again next year.

No matter how ready I think I am for a Brazen race they always manage to throw a surprise my way the Wildcat was no exception. It’s a slow start pushing everyone through single gate only the first 10 or so are able to start at a run. After that and I would say for the rest of the 10K its all fire roads and no more single track. There are still plenty of ruts to twist an ankle or in some cases fall into so you have to be careful on the whole course.

The first mile was almost entirely uphill, someone told me that these are rolling hills compared to the ones coming up, little did I suspect. Mile 2 & 3 were fairly flat and I was able to pick up some speed and enjoy the weather and the scenery. As we came to the second and last aid station for the 10k we hooked a left and headed uphill for mile 4. I took turns running, walking (both backward and forward) getting to the top of this 500+ foot climb. On the way up and at the top the views were amazing and with the clear day we had you could see for miles I stopped and snapped some picks of the Golden Gate on one side and San Pablo Dam on the other.

Mile 5 & 6 were mostly downhill with some pretty steep/speed downhill runs. You have to be careful of ruts and other runners here (and your knees) but it was a fun adventure heading to the finish. All the standard Brazen fare and boat anchor of medal awaited you!

Somewhere in my head I made the decision to go ahead and try the 1/2 next year! So yes I enjoyed it and most likely need hospitalization for being a lunatic!

Last year’s Western Pacific was my first 10k this year was my first Brazen ½ marathon. I was not thrilled with my performance, I am sure that will come with time I started out fine and not unexpectedly fizzled out at the end. Need more training to finish how I would like but still overall thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

I arrived around 6:55 packet pick up went fine and parking was a breeze. I watched the start of the full marathon which is a Boston Qualifier so there were a good number of people running it. Hopefully next year I will be running the full marathon. The race was pretty flat it went partially around the lake and then loops onto the Alameda creek trail for several miles and then we returned back to the lake trail and around to the finish.

The weather was great and the race went smoothly for me. I have to say thank you to the all the aid station workers. The aid stations as usual were well stocked and had cool water to refill my water bottle as well as a good mix of sweet and salty snacks, Gu and sports drink. I honestly prefer hills and trails to flat runs but I had a great time.

I recommend this race to anyone whether they are a road runner or a trail runner like all Brazen races its well done, well organized and a lot of fun.

I was pretty excited to be running in San Francisco, The Presidio, Golden Gate Bridge the beach the Ocean. What an amazing place we live in to run in. I feel so lucky when I run in the Bay Area it can be minutes or hours away and it’s always beautiful.

There was no disappointments today we had great weather, it chose to go early on Sunday Am 6:45 to get my bib. Tshirt etc. No lines no hassles.

Pre race they had, fruit, water, coffee and plenty of porta potties. The national anthem and then a quick 5 minute stretching session and we were off right at 8:00!

The hills I. The Presidio were not bad as several have mentioned in other reviews, Crossing he GG bridge was pretty awesome there was a cool breeze heading back. Down to the beach. By now is had been running with many of the 10kers but there was plenty off room to allow people to pass everywhere we went. Not single track anywhere.

We soon mixed in with the 5k and oncoming traffic. Again everyone was really polite and traffics seemed to flow well. The last few miles are not as scenic but the rest of the race was amazing.

After race the medals and after part were everything promised. No issues or wait with bag.check. The Guardsmen put in a great show.

I believe the 10 miler was either .4 or so short or my GPS misfired but for me it really did not matter. The expirience was perfect.

Highly recommended

I have a strong preference for Brazen races so its easy to always rate them high, but I enjoyed this race more then any other Brazen race. The weather was amazing, the course was everything that made me love trail running. I did the 10k and I think Sam said we would pass through 11 creeks twice 2.

The race starts off with a nice open path a little uphill and you hit the first creek the water was freezing and felt great on my feet. You cross plenty more creeks some with water almost to my knees.

You then hit a single track path that winds on up the mountain for 2 miles before turning and heading back down in a loop and back the way you came. re-crossing the 11 creeks again. The finish was the standard (awesome) Brazen finish line. They offered the normal fair and Its-It. The extra-ordinary plus was that there was delicious BBQ on offer.

We stayed a couple hours longer then usual to just enjoy the amazing weather and beautiful park. Being able to watch the 1/2 marathon and 50k runners finish was inspirational. The 10k offered everything I could ask for, technical trails, single track climbs, mud and water crossings. I have to imagine the 1/2 and 50k were so tough but I will have to try the 1/2 next time!

This is my first “big” race I think the most runners at any one even I have ever attended before this was probably around 1200 or so. To hear that there are 10,000 attendees and share a race with 2500+ people was pretty exciting. I was a bit disappointed with my time but did not let that color the experience.

Pre Race – I decided 2 days before the race that I wanted to do it and actually had no issues registering or picking up my bib. The pick up and festivities were at the Oakland Marriott.

Race Day – They held the Marathon and 5K early around 7:30 the 1/2 was at 9:30. This was to allow those who wanted to participate in both the 5K and 1/2 to receive a special “Run this Town” Oakland medal. Overall the setup and the vibe were great. There was plenty of port-a-potties room to sit down and enjoy the great weather. The 1/2 actually started earlier the advertised so I am glad I was already there. The race wound through downtown Oakland which was fine there are some better sites to be seen in Oakland and I was surprised that it did not go through some of the residential or waterfront areas.

There were plenty of people on the sidelines cheering us on they were awesome and helped me through some tough miles at the end. Aid stations were spread throughout the course but I still can’t get used to throwing my water cup on the ground and ended up with one in my pocket most of the last 10 miles of the race.

The late start time made for a hot last 4 miles. The finish was pretty cool I was ready to walk and all the cheering kept me going! The medal was pretty cool, the after party was great, its so nice to see people from all race, creed and color enjoying hanging out, listening to music and stretching sore muscles together. They ran out of beer early if that’s your thing you may have been frustrated.

Another Brazen race after a rainy winter and they managed to pull it off with few hitches. I cannot imagine the challenges that Sam and Jasmine have run into this year with all the rain, the Silver Creek area had been underwater several weeks before the race so we were lucky to be able to run it. It forced some sub optimal changes to the course but it was still a fun race. I had run the 5k previously and the 10k was very similar all paved and a flat course. The course itself was in a kind of T shape, this forced the half runners to have do some back and forth on the same trail.

The last mile of my 10k was crowded with 5k runners, walkers, strollers and kids. This was fine with me although I did hear some people complain I guess I find it easier to make my way around kids and strollers then mud, rocks, roots and fallen trees.

When it comes to Brazen I am biased I have never had a bad experience and the fact that they have been able to pull off two races in poor conditions at short notice and not miss a beat says a lot about why I am so biased. Altogether a good race day!

The race was run at Wildcat in El Sobrante because Lake Del Valle was not ready to support the race. Either way it was a challenging race.I should know when Sam says “rolling hils” that does not signify easy hills. Like all things Brazen it was a well marked course with great people volunteering at the aid stations. The first mile included cows, ruts and is mostly uphill and if I learned anything from past Brazen 10k’s for me it makes the most sense to run uphill until I can’t then speed walk and start running again when it levels out. This prevents me from running outta gas in the last mile. The trail itself had few muddy places with few choices but to get dirty! No complaints here I enjoyed the mud last year and this was not close to as wet. We ran on pavement for bit to dirt trail again all the way to turn around then back to the finish line. Was happy with my time and managed 2nd in my age group! Was excited to have such a good run at such a challenging venue the 2nd place was a bonus.

Many thanks to Sam, Jasmin and the parks getting us a place to run and all the volunteers who came out and supported us.

If your looking, for a well marked, timed , race full of swag this is not the race for you. If you want to experience awesome views, some sections of technical trail in a fun, family atmosphere I would recommend this race. I forgot how beautiful Angel Island is and this race was a great refresher. The course could have been better marked but if you listened to Dave your knew where to go. This will not be my last Enviro race!
