A couple things about this course that I wish I had known going into this race and I suspect other runners would appreciate knowing before they sign up.

First, I was surprised how much of the course is on dirt trail. I don’t remember the exact distance on that but it felt like every bit of 4-6 miles. It’s not technical but you do need to watch out for your footing in some areas.

Secondly, there are a LOT of very sharp switchbacks and steep downhill. Some of the switchbacks were almost 90 degree turns coming off of a monster downhill. I had a great race season and was healthy going into this race. After this run I’m nursing a number of injuries that I can only tie to how the course was built. Trying to downshift and adjust on a dime like that multiple times is a problem.

So, if you’re truly racing I would stay away from this race. If you’re looking for a good time and don’t mind having to adjust your pace and stride multiple times over, and you like dirt trail, have at it.

I’m from the south where “trail” can be a relative term. So, when I signed up for this one and saw that it was a trail race and that it was categorized as “moderate” I thought maybe some packed dirt roads and some decent hills. I was wrong.

This race is a real life, pretty technical (especially if you don’t run trails regularly) trail race. Probably a mile of payment then turns into dirt/gravel road, lots of single track, and stretches with some serious rocks. I lost count of the number of people I saw slipping around in their road shoes. I can’t say much about the course because I didn’t see it. Instead I was head down trying not to turn an ankle.

The overall organization of the event was superb, and again, if you’re into trails you’ll probably love it. I’m not so I didn’t.

This was my 37th half marathon and my 34th state and it was, without question, the most beautiful course I’ve run. For the first time ever I stopped to take pictures. There were just so many incredible views, it felt like a dream.

This was my first Vacation Race and I was just so impressed with their organization and their communication. They over communicate and it’s wonderful.

Do this race. You won’t regret it.
