This was my 3rd marathon & I would highly recommend this race to anyone. Here’s why:
1) It’s logistically easy. Free parking & plenty of parking for the race start & expo. Gear check was simple & quick (they just throw it in a truck and then sort by number later). Plenty of portapotties so easy to arrive, do your pre-race business, and get to your corral without stress.
2) You want it? They have it. Free bagels and coffee at the start. The student athletic center locker rooms are open for post-run showers and $6. A good variety of post run free food: pasta, pizza, chocolate milk, all the usuals. A free fleece blanket to marathon finishers with the metallic heat-sheets to keep you warm after finish.
3) The course is a little boring with mostly just running through different residential neighborhoods. The race coordinated different musicians to be spread along the course to help entertain. Also, there were a lot of community support and people out cheering which helps. Lots of unofficial aid stations with extra water, pickle juice, jelly beans and more. Lots of people dressed in costumes. Very few hills and only small rollers (by Chicago standards — perfectly flat to anyone else).
Overall, a very well organized race and great community support makes this a race I’d come back to run again.

The Indy Monumental marathon is one I highly recommend. The course is large enough to accommodate the volume of runners (even prior to the half marathon split), runs around some nice neighborhoods and interesting sights, and allows for you to see landmarks near the finish from a good distance so you can visually see when you are in the final mile. The other runners were friendly, and a few bands play music to cheer you on so running the course is pleasant. Also helps that it is pretty darn flat.

The race management is very good. At the last minute, President Trump decided to stay at a hotel within a block of the finish line on race day and information regarding additional street closures and updates were professionally and promptly dispersed to runners.

The race t-shirt was printed in the colors of the Indianapolis flag & in my opinion was a bit ugly & gaudy. The beanie cap they hand out at the finish line was nice & they had a lot of nice race swag for sale at the expo.

I might be biased as I PR’d, but with the great course and great running weather at that time of year, its a race I highly recommend.

This is a race that I have run multiple times & will continue to do in the future. It features a nice course with the first miles on city streets to ensure enough space for runners at the start and then the rest is mostly on the lakefront path. The race has a good number of aid stations. You can appreciate the beautiful lakefront for nearly the entire race and in the final half features nice views of the skyline. Following the race, they serve a warm brunch with a lot of good food, beer from Lagunita’s, and a band. They also have a fresh flower station so you bring home a growing flower. From start to after party, it’s a great experience and a great value.

This was my first marathon, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. Here are the pros:
– Logistically easy. Plenty of parking, easy to get to on time, the rolling start is self assigned, packet pick up is simple.
– The course has a decent amount of shade. It follows the Fox Valley river along a paved path for the majority of the race. This path is very flat.
– A decent number of runners do the 20 mile run as training for Chicago, so there are a lot of people sharing the course with you until mile 11 and then again for the final few miles.

Cons:
– They pick the hilliest streets of the starting suburbs for the course to start the first few miles. A tad unnecessarily hilly.
– It’s September in Illinois. It can be VERY hot and humid. Some years they have needed to stop the race due to extreme temperatures.
– There are only about 600 marathon finishers and as such very few supporters along the course. Do not expect a lot of people to be cheering you on.
