It was a well put race. The swag was great as well. The only thing is that they assign corrals from a previous verified marathon time. I had one where I was injured and still ran. However I was put in the last corral and they are pretty strict about not going with your assigned corral. The route is a single trail most of the way. So it was not pretty difficult to pass people. It’s almost 8000 feet of elevation gained so it was tough. Once passing the tree like for the last 3 miles on the ascent, it was a little bit difficult to breathe. However it wasn’t impossible. The air is definitely cleaner as well. Also since it was single track most of the way, people also returning had the right of way. Also the last 3 miles it was more like hiking. Very uneven terrain and sometimes climbing rocks. The combination of being behind people, giving right of way to people coming down and the uneven terrain definitely makes this one of the hardest marathons ever.

The way down is just as difficult as the rocks are very difficult. It takes a toll on your quads and after you get back to the tree line, the course has a lot of roots coming out as well. I fell about 5 times.

Overall this is a one and done race for me. However it did not disappoint. Would recommend for sure. I would recommend that someone trains for it. Also try to get a good marathon time so you are not stuck behind many people walking.

Huntsville is not the best marathon I have raced. The swag and expo was pretty disappointing. They didn’t have much to offer in purchasing anything. Not really any selection of shirts and didn’t have any jackets (not even for sale). They had some generic Rocket City hoodies that were comfortable but I think they were from past races.

There were a couple of hotels near the start and finish line, however nothing worth writing home. The first half of the marathon is run through some of run down areas of Huntsville. The back half though was more scenic going through the Rocket areas and outside of Redstone Arsenal. I am hoping this wasn’t the best Alabama has to offer.
