What wasn’t there to like about this marathon? This was my 14th marathon, including Boston in 2019, and it is by far one of my favorites. Ironically, I didn’t even sign up for this race until two weeks prior after the original marathon I had signed up for (the Milwaukee Lakefront Marathon) was cancelled.
Expo:
I wasn’t able to make the expo, but had someone else pick my packet up for me. They were able to park and get in and out without any issues. The swag included with the packet was more than I was expecting and included a quality long sleeve shirt, a hat and gloves with the event branding.
Lodging:
There are tons of hotels in the Quad Cities area so finding one at a decent rate wasn’t a problem, even less than two weeks prior to race day.
Getting to the Start Line:
I like to get to a race early enough that I have enough time to get to the start line, warm up and use the porta potties at least once and this was by far the easiest experience of any medium to large sized race. We were easily able to find a spot in a parking structure right next to the start.
The Main Event:
The race itself was fantastic! The organizers were energetic and the start went off without any hitches aside from the start cannon firing a few seconds early. Did I mention there was a start freakin’ cannon? The course was awesome, with views of the Mississippi River for 3/4 of the race. Some of the sections were a little more challenging than I expected like the first bridge and some uphills on the Bettendorf side, but they had bagpipers and ample crowds out there to keep us motivated and moving forward!
Post Race:
The after-race party was a blast, with a band and plenty of beer to go around. The finisher medals were top notch as well as the awards (I got a nice glass plaque for finishing first in the Masters division).
All-in-all this was a great race and I will definitely be back to run it again!
