This year the course went from downtown, past the Governor’s residence, and up through a patch of hilly streets before heading over to Drake. This was a bit challenging! But the rest of the course was much more agreeable and we ended up in a really flat part of town. Great support all the way along the course, plenty of music almost the entire way, and lots of encouragement from the neighborhoods we passed through! This is my second running of this marathon and it’s been a lot of fun both times.

They held a contest to see which neighborhood had the best cheering squad, so some of these went all out! Very nice city to run in. Somehow I managed to miss where they were handing out race shirts at the end and they actually mailed one to me for free! I thought that was pretty decent attention to detail. We stayed right next door to the park where the race was to be held so that made it super easy to just walk out the door to the race. The course is kinda hilly and there is everything from decayed industrial to some of the nicest homes in the city. Overall a very nice race to run to get you charged up for the spring running season.

This isn’t a big race but if you’re looking for a good half-marathon to get you through the summer, it’s a pretty good choice! It’s got some really decent hills and it’s almost completely on gravel, so you have to be careful about stepping on some pretty good rocks. The route takes you way back by a river and then out in the open to finish; a very peaceful run! Rest stops are right where you need them. It is August in Iowa so the heat is always an issue.

Decided to run with a pace group and had one of the best races of my career! This guy was a joy to run with. All the folks I’ve run with that are part of the Garmin pace team have been top-notch; they know the course and so they adjust the pace for hills and rest stops.

Awesome scenery, nice hill from about 14-20 miles that takes you from North Mankato downtown. The year I did it they had students from the college’s sport psychology department on bicycles to quiz us on what we’d like them to tell us to motivate us! Fun!
