I grew up in Fort Worth, but I had surprisingly never run Cowtown! Now I live in NYC so I decided to make a weekend trip out of it.

Packet pick-up was incredibly easy and the expo was great—not too overwhelming, but had everything you need and lots of great deals from the local running store, Luke’s Locker.

On the day of, start corrals were very neatly organized and it was great to have use of the neighboring expo hall for indoor bathrooms or simply a place the relax and stretch before the race. Corrals started in waves and the whole process was smooth.

The course took you through most of Fort Worth’s Northside, including the Historic Stockyards. Aid stations were spaced nicely—about every 1.5 miles. Crowd support on the course was great too, especially along the long uphill slog on North Main Street, heading toward the Tarrant County Courthouse. The bands along the way were great too!

Upon finish, we were immediately given a water bottle and our medal before heading into one of the barns for food/swag. The food line was LONG but moved quickly. I was surprised that there was only one line for food among all finishing runners! The food itself was a nice assortment, and this former Texan really appreciated the Blue Bell ice cream.

The medal is beautiful and unique. I love that you got not only a participant shirt, but a finisher’s shirt and a light/disposable jacket too. It’s an expensive race for a half-marathon, but in retrospect, I think it’s worth it. (Register earlier to save a few bucks!)

All in all, Cowtown Race Weekend is a wonderful and well-organized event. It’s befitting of a charming city like Fort Worth and I’m already looking to make it an annual tradition on my race calendar.

Took a long weekend from NYC to run this race. Portland is a great town with lots of good eats and beautiful scenery.

We picked up our bibs the morning of which wasn’t a hassle at all. The start consisted of two waves, but beyond that, there wasn’t much of a corral system so I was hard to know where you were lining yourself up at.

The course weaves through Portland, passing some beautiful neighborhoods and looping back down Portland’s main street before heading around a lake (partially on dirt trail here) and back to the start. There is minimal shade in some parts, but aid stations were plentiful.

After the finish, Shipyard hosted a nice post-race beer garden where runners could get two beers. There was also free pizza and several Portland food trucks came out with food for purchase and samples. There was even a portable shower truck where, for a couple bucks, you could take a nice shower and have a clean towel. I actually used this, since we had plans to walk around Portland the rest of the day, and was instantly refreshed!

Swag is just so-so… There isn’t any apart from the medal. The medal is nice, but if you’re expecting a shirt or anything more, you have to buy it.
