This was my first time entering the wine country race. So many people raved about it my expectations were high, and by and large I wasn’t disappointed. The weather was as good as it gets, overcast and in the 50s for most of the run. Support along the course was really excellent; and the mile markers easy to see. The course is a bit hilly, though not as bad as I feared. The downside was the finisher medal–it looks like a joke and is a waste of materials. As a beer drinker I chose to buy the beer “glass” which is made of silicone, another disappointment. Overall this is a great race, which I plan to do again.

Santa Anita Derby 5K would be a great first race for a new runner. But the course was clogged with slower participants who seeded themselves in faster corrals than they should have. The course was also slowed by a lot of picture taking, and as it wound through the arboretum, a Canada Goose! As other reviewers have reported the course is gorgeous and production great. The finisher medals look like Boston finisher knock-offs and they have an integrated bottle opener!
