My second RMHM was as awesome as the first. The race was preceded by a simple but elegant expo at the Stanley Hotel. A course change made for an easier start and finish (no bus required) near Lake Estes. There is elevation gain in this course, but even as a flatlander, I found it invigorating. The scenery, including views of Long’s Peak and other mountains of nearby Rocky Mountain National Park, is unmatched. Course support is good, and the race is a good size for the course. I enjoyed visiting with old friend Bart Yasso at the finish. The race always includes a set of challenges, including climbs to Hallett Peak and Chasm Lake, and I’ve always enjoyed the feeling of accomplishment at having done these climbs the same day as the race. RMNP is one of my favorite destinations, and I look forward to running my third RMHM this August.

Austin is an extremely well-run production, and the host city is equally wonderful. The expo is one of the best I’ve been to, if not a tad difficult to get to, and the surrounding entertainment and eateries are plentiful. Race day parking is easy, and the Congress Street start is a breeze. Make no mistake. This is a hilly course, but I’ve found that it is refreshing for the legs to have gentle rollers throughout the course. I’ve run both the half and full on multiple occasions, and both are excellent. Aid stations are well-stocked, crowds are awesome, and the neighborhoods and scenery are pleasant. Weather is usually good for the half, and a little warm for the full. Swag is also nice, with thoughtfully-designed medals and tech shirts. Stay an extra day and catch some live local music on famous 6th Street Sunday night. Love this race!
