This small, but well organized race in the beautiful Appalachian foothills is unique and challenging. Having run nearly 50 distance races, the HMM is one that is so memorable and unique to me, and it’s the great people who make it happen. The aid stations were well stocked with tasty treats and cold drinks, first aid, and plenty of friendly hospitality. The medal for the 25th anniversary was spectacular, and the shirt was well designed. They even included a spaghetti dinner at the packet pickup, but there is no expo, per se, so bring your own gear and gels, etc. It was fun to have actors dressed as Devil Anse Hatfield and Randall McCoy for photo ops and high fives at the finish. Not to mention the well-coordinated busing of runners to 2 different start lines came off without a hitch. The history of the Hatfield and McCoy feud and the Battle of Matewan make the trip to the area even more special, and you can see many historical markers along the race route. I can’t recommend this race enough! Just train for those hills!

This race was a lot of fun, from beginning to end! The amazing expo had everything from hair braiding and sweet treats to must-have running gear (like my fav, Sparkle Skirts). Parking was easy in a nearby garage. The atmosphere was upbeat and empowering. The many folks who lined the route and cheered, offered snacks and drinks, and even tissues were amazing! Each mile had a fun theme. The after party was a bit crowded and chaotic at first, but the gifts were nice; A mimosa, a sunflower, a bottle of wine, and a Skyline Cheese Coney. My only minor complaint was, I’m a vegetarian so, no coney for me. But I highly recommend this awesome race!
