The thing the surprised me the most was how fast the 2nd half went. The descent downhill after mile 14 is noticeable and really makes it easy to run negative splits. The first half going uphill is also noticeable, but nearly as much. The area is remote and sometimes it felt like things could have been marked a little better, but that was part of the charm I suppose. I would also have liked to have seen different shirts and medals for the marathoners vs half marathoners, but thats ok. Both are nice enough. The real reason to run this race is the Hills themselves and they do not disappoint. The first two mile section on the road has a great view that I was not expecting. Another stunner around mile 20. The whole course was really great though. I would absolutely recommend!

I am writing this review in June of 2021 because I only recently discovered Race Raves-
This review is specific to my participation in 2018. The course is great. I live in La Crosse, so most of my training runs are in Hixon forest. It is beautiful. The awesome thing about this race is that it took me on some trails I didn’t even realize existed. My wife and I signed up sort of last minute and our lack of training showed. It had rained the day before and a bit the morning of and we were at the back of the pack. The trail had gotten pretty torn up by faster runners and there were sections that got so sloppy, my wife needed me to push or pull her up because she was sliding backwards. lol. We ended up walking a ton of the course and were probably pretty close to being dead last finishers, but we had a lot of fun anyway. The long sleeve shirts are nice. The pottery for finishers are nice touches as well, but maybe shouldn’t replace medals. Runners like to have something to hang around their necks.
I would highly recommend traveling to La Crosse for this race as there are some really stunning overlooks, friendly volunteers, and fun semi-technical trails.

What a great race! Only a few minutes from my house meant I got to sleep in my own bed the night before as a bonus! Race was well organized, the gravel trail felt nice on my knees and the scenery was pretty even if it not all that varied. Of course the tunnel is cool, but the ruts in the trail caused by the water in the tunnel were the worst part of the race, to be honest. The trail racing community is so awesome in Wisconsin and this race seems to really embrace that!

This was a very nice, low stress race. For 50-staters not wanting to spend a ton of money on Chicago and just want something low key, this is a great option. The medal is kinda small, but it matches the price. The trails are of course beautiful, and actually very flat meaning this was actually a fairly easy race.

This race was a big surprise. I hadn’t planned to run as this was just a couple weeks after TC, but at the EXPO (my wife was running the half) I just decided to go for it. I did not regret that. I got to run most of the first half with my wife, and the 2nd half of the race was really well supported, particularly by the college in town. Finishers medal is pretty cool.

This was my first marathon and I chose a great one. The expo was exciting and smooth. The energy at the starting line was electric. Even with the corral system, the first several miles were very congested, which I might have found more problematic if I had any real time goals, but as I mentioned, this was my first and all I wanted was to finish. The trails around the many lakes and fall colors made this course beautiful, and the aid stations, volunteers, and spectators were incredible. The long gradual uphill along Summit Ave felt tough, but the view from the end of the climb to the Capital and finish line below was amazing. Great race, would recommend.
