No marathon is easy, for a runner like me, but this course was great. Nice rolling hills with an overall downhill. Race production is fantastic, and the best for a race of this size. If you want to shoot for that BQ or even Olympic Standard, this is certainly the place to give it a go.

The course was a beautiful challenge with hill after glorious hill, and what’s that at the last two miles…more hills! Not an easy course, but a course that will make that finish line seem glorious, and once finishing, you know you have accomplished something.

Overly concentrated Gatorade at the aid stations, and in the last five miles there were not enough aid stations. Disorganized running festival at the finish, as we never knew where we were going to get medals from. The expo had vendor booths that closed before the end of the expo, which made the expo one of the lower quality expos I have ever experienced. Host hotel also didn’t allow late check out, therefore runners couldn’t return to take a shower. The course was a mix of beauty and run down areas with boarded up windows. You don’t go anywhere near the nice parts of Jack London Square, and so it is a bit deceptive to say you run through JLS. The race has 4 of the last 6 miles on unshaded road. Overall, I had good expectations, but the race and organizers and partners did not live up to their reputations.

The very beginning of this course takes you toward the scenic marina of Long Beach. As you are crossing the first bridge you see the sun just beginning to peek up over the horizon. You continue through the Harbor as the sun rises in the sky as you head out toward the beach. You are dazzled with beautiful scenery, even as you head inland. Running through the CSU Long Beach campus is great as you run past the iconic Pyramid. All along the course there is wonderful volunteers and great support along the course. There were plenty of Gel Stations, Electrolytes, and Water, as I barely had to break into my prepared gels that I brought to the race. Great organization, and a beautiful course. The only critique I would have is the mixture of marathoners and half marathoners at the end, as the last two miles were a nightmare to weave around walkers and slower runners, maybe more of a clear delineation of the two distances, as spectators were forcing the two races into a single lane. Overall, one of my favorite races.

The race is on a fairly flat course that is not overly challenging. Allows for your friends and family to see you at numerous locations along the course. MORE
