This was an amazing race experience with some unforgettable moments.
The course itself is the most difficult and technical imaginable – you’re in for a bad time if you’re not wearing trail running shoes, without which you won’t be able to safely take advantage of the steep declines following several-minute-long climbs without risking sliding off the edge of trail out of control.
There are sections of the course that have you climbing up a steep incline for 5+ minutes at a time, and it’s daunting to look up ahead and see no reprieve in sight. There are also sections where the trail is so thin and winding that there is only width for a single foot step before it crumbles down into the ravine below. You’ll rarely be bored – it’s a fun and engaging run that requires you to stay constantly aware of your surroundings and where your feet are landing, which can get tiring.
Despite (or maybe because of) the great challenge this course presents, the highs are incredible. Reaching the top of each hill, particularly the first seemingly unending one, runners are rewarded with a picturesque panoramic view of the valley before a rapid descent. The trail itself is generally well maintained, and the scenery is varied and interesting throughout the 13+ miles. There are 5 aid stations for the half marathon, and each had a wide assortment of water, electrolytes, and snacks as well as support from great volunteers.
Overall I had a fantastic time despite being not quite up to the challenge physically, and I’m looking forward to giving it another shot next year with more training under my belt.
