Being a first-timer for any marathon and running on my own, I was really anxious about what to expect, what I needed to provide on my own, or prepare for. Come race day, there weren’t really any questions to ask. Everything is so well planned that it leaves no room for questions. Parking, drop-off, shuttle information and more was very thoroughly provided in your bib packet. Water stations were well placed. Just as I was dying, the energy and snack stations appeared. The medical assists and pacers that run through the race are extremely appreciated as well.
We ran by the beach, through the bay back nature reserve, through and through beautiful neighborhoods. The terrain was slightly hilly, but none of the hills were incredibly steep or insurmountable. Fairly easy hills in my opinion. There are police officers and guides and cheering crowds throughout the course. Let’s not forget to mention being in SoCal Newport, the weather was perfect. You’re not freezing your behind off at 5:30AM nor melting completely by the end of the race other than from your own body heat, but that’s inevitable.
At the end of the race, gatorade and water and snacks were immediately handed out to the runners. There was a whole area available for stretching and rolling out your muscles. Sage essential oils was onsite to help relieve some pain along with complimentary massages!
Overall, it was a really great experience. I wasn’t sure if I was going to do it again, but everything was so well planned out that I’m already eager for next year’s race and to have a new personal best time.

Thanks OC Marathon.
