It was much better organized this year. Pick-up at the expo went smoother. the race started on time. Post race this year was also well organized. Well done!! I’m giving 5 stars just for this.

Course is scenic as always. Nice weather.

However, the tech shirt designs still suck. Make the artwork prettier please!!! Also I really wish they would stop using plastic bags to give us our bibs and shirts. Plastic bags are banned in LB. Make it a reusable shopping bag with “long beach marathon/half marathon” or a sponsor name on it. One of those string backpacks, would be even better.

I like the LB half marathon medals better with the Queen Mary design on it. This year the art was ok but no queen Mary. Last years medal was outstanding.

And I managed to get my cup of shock top beer from the beach bum club area (as I’m a beach bum) but I’d heard grumbling from other runners that they’d run out of micholob beer in the main beer garden.

No swag. No free tee-shirts. For 60 bucks!!

Why, why, why can’t they have race day pick up? It’s so annoying and a hassle for me to go to Torrance to pick up my bib.

Rude ass volunteers! They put me in a bad mood before the race.

Hardly any post race snacks.

Paid 10 bucks for the post race breakfast and there was no salt/pepper for my eggs.

The “Monster Dash” in Long Beach had cute medals, I loved them. I love “A Better World” running organization, and run a race a month with them. Their events are very well organized. They hold races in Long Beach, Santa Monica, Van Nuys, and Huntington Beach on a monthly basis. They’re small (about 150 runners), held on the beach or in a park and there’s gatoraid station and a great swag bag (cloth bag) with bananas and snacks and some samples.

This was my second year running the half. Great medals this year for the half and especially the marathon, it was big and heavy and round and had the Queen Mary on it. Not so impressed with the shirt, however. Seems a little bland with only text, no artwork.

I live five minutes walk away from the start line so I don’t have to deal with traffic. I had no issues picking up bibs at the expo but there seemed to be less samples this year. I WISH they would quit giving out plastic bags, both at the expo and at the finish line.

Last year a volunteer was rude to me at the beer garden so I didn’t bother getting my free beer this year (I’ll wait until I’m a beach bum and go to their beer garden in future.)

Race course is pretty easy. One easy hill with the queensway bridge. Finish line is on a downhill slope. Good race support with water every mile and Nuun at selected miles and stinger gels at mile 10. View is beautiful. Running on the cement bike path on the beach really does a number on my feet, however. And I wish they’d close off the bike/running path to non-participants, I can’t tell you how many times cyclists were weaving in and out of runners. One jerk came right at me on a bike.

Slower runner/walker friendly with a generous finish deadline.

Pros: Easy scenic course. Love the medals and the tote bags! LOVE the community element and a good amount post race snacks were given out. Can’t beat the free packages of King’s Hawaiian bread. Good food for sale from vendors. It was fun wearing a grass skirt and a lei to run in. Lots of people cheering us on the course!!!

Cons: Disorganized. Some of the volunteers didn’t know what was going on. Since I picked a shirt as my freebie and paid 10 dollars extra for my tote bag, they were hesitant to give me my tote bag. No difference in medals for 5/10 k. Why we had to fill out paper waivers at a separate table, I have no idea. Really slowed down bib pick up. And I wish they would not use plastic for the goodie bags!!

The 5k race event for the Long Beach Triathalon was horribly disorganized. Rude runners. No separate finisher medals for the 5k. They gave us Triathalon finisher medals which embarrassed me (because we didn’t do the tri.) I may do the tri in future but beware of your equipment, a participant got their bike stolen out of the transition area in 2017’s event.)

Ran this in 2015 and 2017. Challenging but very scenic course on the Vincent Thomas Bridge (usually closed to pedestrians). One of my favorite races. Love that it’s on Labor Day. I loved the Fleet Week event afterwards. The breakfast for $10 was fantastic! Wish they would have race day bib pick-up as its a pain for me to get to Torrance the weekend before. Post race oranges are great. This year they had tee shirts and tank tops and hats for sale at the bib pick-up, which I appreciated. Cool medals.

I love the carbo load giveaway (noodles). I love the community element. Can be a bit disorganized, depends on the year. Great entertainment before and after.

It was fun seeing everybody dressed up in turkey themed attire and costumes. Course was hilly and challenging but they ran out of finisher medals!!! I didn’t get one at the finish line. Volunteers were kind of useless with info. Had to have my medal mailed to me a month later which sucked. (I like to get pics taken with my medal immediately after the race).

The only thing I liked about this race was the medal and the tech shirt.

Too many switchbacks on this course. The expo/bib pick up was at a theatre which stunk of mildew. Race time was very early (6am) which made it difficult for me to get to via MTA train. Other runners in this race were beyond rude. Ran this once in 2016 but never again.
