Starting with the expo and packet pick up – all was well organized and not too crowded even though 18000 people were registered for the races. Start line was pretty well organized with gear check and pace markers. The course was a little hilly, nothing extreme. The first 5 miles had several bands playing which was nice. Would have been great to have some later in the course for a pick-me-up. The finish line was the biggest disappointment – snack bag was pathetic and nothing that I would ever eat (pork rinds), the beer tent had such a long line that I skipped it. Left with a bottle of water and my Medal. Photo package was a big PLUS for this race. They took many great photos and only charged $30 for all of your pictures – I had at least 12 good ones.

After a day on the bike, why not a trail run? This course takes you winding through the woods. Nothing too difficult but do pick up your feet! I did manage to plant myself face first in the dirt. If you are a fast runner, get to the front of the pack early. Within a mile the trail drops to single track and bottlenecks which greatly hurt my time. Oh well! The medals are fabulous (not that any of us do this for the medals).

I have done several of the Vacation Race series and this was the best of them. The half marathon is a large loop and so there is no reliance on shuttles (which seems to be a HUGE downfall for this series). This half is all trail, some minor hills, beautiful wooded area with the trail running beside the river at times. Easy and well organized packet pick up and start line. The only negative was some very grumpy and rude volunteers. The expo had a handful of vendors with some give aways. ( managed to win stuff from 2 or 3 vendors! There is a photo package that you can purchase before the race but that was not worth the money. Very few pictures were taken. The finish line picture is free and was the only good picture. The best thing about this race is that it got me to finally visit this beautiful part of our country. I spent a week hiking Yellowstone – fabulous. Medals for this series are very nice – if you do the challenges then the combo medals are amazing.

This race had some major disappointments and frustrations. The course was outstanding with the most fabulous scenery you could ever have for a race. The backdrop for the entire course was the Grand Tetons mountains – WOW. The start line did not have adequate parking and there were no shuttles for folks that had to park far away. The course was one way and there were supposed to be shuttles to take us back to the start line. I waited in line for 2 hours for a shuttle. That may not have been so bad but it was HOT, there was not shade, and no vendors or any entertainment. Just standing around in the direct sun for hours. Poor organization! Medals are great, snack pack at the end of the race is disappointing. Do prepare for the altitude if you are a sea level person like me!
