I love training on this trail so to see how I could fare in a race was awesome. The views coming back to Stinson Beach are spectacular. I’m a bio nerd, so having a wide range of flora to look at always keeps my interest even though I’ve run here plenty of times.
This is a challenging course from the ascents and descents and the fact that there’s two-way traffic on single track. I thought the aid station were spread apart at a good distance as I didn’t find myself needing water or food in between. I didn’t carry anything with me besides a few gel packets.
The biggest factor that would deter me from running this course again is having to slow down and maneuver around hikers while trying not to slip off the side of the trail.
The finish is at the beach so it’s great to just hang around, chat with friends, or take an ice bath in the ocean.

This was my second 50k, but I’ve run most of these trails during training. I was excited to see a lot of runners had come to this event. The morning started out cold, but I ran in my shorts, tank, and pack. The first half of the course wasn’t anything difficult; I ran a majority of the trails. The second half was more of a struggle. The course is exposed, and it was a hot day (although not as hot as the previous year). There were 4-5 aid stations, so really spread out. Everyone is superfriendly. I ran out of water before the 3rd aid station and it was all uphill, but another runner gave me some water and a ranger/volunteer at one of the check points happened to have a bottle that he gave to me. The trail is well marked, and there are course marshals to guide you in the confusing spots. Most of the time you can see runners way out in front so you can get a sense of where to go. The last 4 miles were the hardest because of Burma trail; feels like uphill forever! When I finished, the majority of runners from other distances had all left so there was just the 50k’s trickling in. Still plenty of food, but at the time all I wanted to do (and most other 50k runners) was just to lay down and take a nap!
