I ran the full to check off Mississippi in my 50 states journey. Packet pickup was at the MGM Stadium – just packet pickup and race related gear. Low key but nice. Buses to the starts (point to point race) were at the stadium as well. Starting area was lively – music, great announcer. There was a bit of a back up for the portajohns right before the start. The weather also cooperated – just the day before it was warm and humid. A front moved in on Saturday, temps at the start were in the 40’s, and it was mostly cloudy the entire full. Lovely course with many beautiful homes along the coast, and the beach and short to your right. There was a bit of a headwind which was annoying! Very well run on the course (police at intersections, etc) and well supported marathon. The highway on ramp at mile 24 (you ran on Rt 110 for about 2 miles before the finish) reminded me of the hills around my house, less the trees and houses! this was the only elevation except for a very slight hill at the end (think Chicago Marathon finish for those who have ran that race) If you plan to give it a go next year, I recommend staying at the DoubleTree hotel. It is at the base of the on ramp I mentioned, and a short walk to the baseball stadium, where the packet pickup is held and bus loading for the ride to the race starts. It is also a short walk to two casinos (for the food, obviously!) and other restaurants. About 15 minutes from the Gulf Port airport.
