The fact I stay up until midnight every New Year’s Eve to register is proof enough!!! There’s no negotiation when scheduling fall races…this one has to fit into the schedule!! The race is very well organized and the course is MUCH better than that “other” Indpls race. They have added corrals which was my only complaint in the past. Volunteers are awesome and course support is there. I think the nicest touch this year was I had a gentleman congratulate me at the finish line…to find out it was the race founder. Where else do you find that??? DON’T MISS THIS RACE!!!

I signed up for this race as part of the Indython with the Monumental. I had been to the park before, but never noticed how many hills there were!!! This was the toughest course I’ve ever done. The scenery was absolutely BEAUTIFUL, but for someone who has no hills to train on, it was mentally and physically brutal.

I don’t have hills to train on, so I went into this race scared to death of the dreaded hills. Were the hills tough? Absolutely. But I have never experienced such amazing crowd support and fun on a course as the Flying Pig!!! Before I left, I was ready to sign up for next year!!

I did this race because I had heard it was much better than the Indy 500 Mini (which was ok) and needed another spring race. The course is enjoyable. I especially enjoyed running through Churchhill Downs and seeing the spires. I also LOVED the course support…from the nursing home handing out oranges to the college kids wanting trading tylenol for beer tickets :).

Being a Purdue alum, I was VERY excited about this race!
Course: Start at Ross-Ade and head out through areas of WL then heading across the river to Lafayette, coming back and going through campus. The finish line is back at Ross-Ade. For someone who hasn’t really seen much of campus in a few years, it was an enjoyable way to see it. But dang…there were HILLS!!! I’m not used to so many…especially late in the race which were KILLERS! There were plenty of water stops, but port-a-pots were few and far between!
Course support: What can I say. I hoped for more from the students, but it was 8:00 on a Saturday morning. They were still sleeping.
Swag: Loved the shirts, but definitely men’s sizes. For a size small woman I swim in it.
Production: The race and on-site packet pick-up were very well organized. Snacks at the end were hit and miss. I got the last cookies and the water was not bottled (BUT available in cups). It was pretty much a help yourself to goodies atmosphere.
Like I said, I was VERY excited about this race. While it wasn’t my favorite (and it definitely isn’t a PR course), it was fun and I would probably run it again.

Second time running this race and will absolutely run it again in the future. Maybe I like this race because I got PR’s both times. I enjoy the expo (nice size for this race), the amount of participants, the bling (featured monuments) and the volunteers (especially at the finish line). The course is enjoyable as it takes you around the visitor sights in the city.

My only con is the lack of corrals. I was lucky enough to qualify to be placed this year, but if not the back is a mess. You know the drill…the people that want to be in the way at the front of the pack.

Besides that…a VERY enjoyable race.

I’ve participated in this race twice out of the 5(?) years. I would have to say, this is definitely one of my favorites. I’ve only been running for 4 years, but every time I’ve done this race, I’ve come away with a PR.
– Expo – the expo is small, but makes for easy packet pick-up. It is held at the Commons in downtown Columbus.
– Swag – in the two times I’ve run the race, the medals have been the same. The shirts run HUGE!!!
– Course – the course runs through the city of Columbus, which is really a beautiful place. I’ve visited there many times, but the course takes you through some interesting parts you don’t normally see. It is BEYOND flat!!! I can’t remember even the slightest elevation, except for the slope that takes you up to the covered bridge in Mill Race Park. The volunteers are honestly the best I’ve ever encountered!! They are so supportive and always smiling.
– Post party – Bring some cash because the post race party is FUN. They have activities, food and beverages for participants and their families. The party lasts until they GIVE away the Dodge pick-up!
When looking at my schedule for 2017, I am planning my races around the Mill Race Half Marathon 🙂

Being from Indiana, I guess it’s against the law or something that if you are a runner you have to do the mini. But that’s where it loses me. I’ve done this race twice. The first time I was completely unprepared, so I gave it a second chance…nope still don’t like it.
The cons are that it is a well-oiled machine. Every thing runs VERY smoothly as to the expo, corrals, finish line. The medals are based off IMS and the race and are usually pretty nice…
And that’s where it loses me. The course takes you through some of Indpls’s “hoods” (my 16yo even noticed some of the shady neighborhoods you go through). The part running around the track…BORING, HOT and painful!! Now, don’t think I am just a woman who doesn’t care about the tradition…I was raised going to the 500 with my family and I understand the significance of the race. But unless you are running right next to the grass, the banking kills your knees and hips.
I figured I would give it another shot, but I don’t think I’ll sign up in the future. If you are looking for a race in Indpls/Indiana, I would consider the Monumental to be a better option.
