This was marathon #4 for me — so I was not in it to prove I could finish the distance or to achieve a PR. Consequently, I went in with a super relaxed attitude and ready just to soak it all in.

And there was so much to soak in! The raw beauty did not disappoint; it lived up to the hype!

The race was organized SO WELL. Everything from packet pick up (where I missed my connection to Monterey and missed the expo — but the registrar reached out to me via email and made alternate plans for pick up!!) to the bus to the start and then throughout the race. I felt like I was a person, not a number, in a major race. One of the best organized races I’ve done!

The hills are certainly no joke, but as long as you train for them — it is not super hard.

The only downside to this race: How will I ever run another race that can compare to this?

Friendly – definitely lives up to the billing there! Neighborhoods came out and cheered throughout the 26 miles which was fabulous! Folks had boxes of tissues, leftover Halloween candy, and shots 🙂 . Tons of music entertainment, never boring!

But, it was also a beautiful course! Running down historical Monument Ave was beautiful, and then running along the gorgeous river with Fall Foliage!

Packet pick up a breeze and the Expo was a nice sized, fun one that was easy to get to and park at! Swag at the end appreciated too 🙂

Getting there easy – parked within 2 blocks of race start about 45 min before race start and then hung out in a hotel lobby staying warm. No sweat!

Perfect course, technically: it’s as flat as you can get and during off season at the beach. We left our rental cottage about 20 min before race start and just walked over to start line!

Beautiful run through the nature reserve and a bit by the ocean – but beware that the last 8 miles or so are through a forest trail that is gravelly and has little stones. Very little crowd support throughout the race and it was tough those last 8 miles.

After party is good, but gets too crowded and is more about people drinking as much “free beer” as they can.

Excellent neighborhood support (wow!!!) with each one putting on their own production! Official race support was amazing too – on the day I ran it was crazy hot and sunny and water stops had wet cold towels handed out for us to cool down.

Overall an excellently put together race (with a seriously awesome medal) –
