First of all, I love the Rock n’ Roll race series. However, I have to be honest…I hate this one. I have done it twice now and had a horrible personal performance both times. Perhaps it is because it is a night race and I just don’t do well on those. But this is just not a fun event for me. You wait forever in the corrals and I am not super fond of running in the residential area near downtown. And getting out of the finishers shoot is like walking another two miles to get out. Overall, the medals are nice, but I don’t plan on doing this for a third time.

that should be enough to entice most to want to do this event. It was my 1st half marathon and the one that got me hooked. IMO RnR’s put on great events. Yes, they are crowded, but I think that just adds to the fun. This particular one is a blast. If I had enough energy, I would do this multiple times. It starts at 4 or 4:30, but keep in mind that is when it gets dark in Vegas at this time of year. So it’s a night time event with all the lights of Las Vegas to take your mind off the 13.1 miles. The only downside to the Vegas RnR is that the headlining band plays at the beginning, instead of at the end. That makes it kinda hard to enjoy it; at least for me, because I am getting into race mode at the beginning.

This is one of the races that I least recommended based on experience. If you are competitive runner, forget about this race and find something else.

Beautiful Scenery:
You get to run on the Tower Bridge in downtown Sacramento and along American River.

Poor production:
Considering the presumption that a race held at the state capital should be well-organized, this race simply proves the opposite. Volunteers and the cops have no idea where the course is. All top runners got lost at the first turnaround point at mile 3. Volunteer left the turnaround sign on the ground instead of propping it up for runners to see. The annoying thing is that I ran by the volunteers and asked about the direction, they had no clue where the turnaround should have been, so we ran an extra half mile only to find out we ran too far. At the second turnaround point, the sign is up, but at a very confusing location. Runners were to double back a single lane trail, which means you are running into oncoming runners. Then there’s the train track which I had to stop. They tried to track it by jotting down your bib number, but how do they know how long each person were waiting at the track when there is no chip scanner to be found in the area? Finally, you are supposed to run past the finish line and continue another quarter mile and turnaround to cross the finish line. But there’s no volunteer or sign directing the runners. I ended up cutting the race short there because a cop at the intersection told me it was OK to run to the finish line without the last bit of turnaround. The bottom line is that I have never ran a more confusing course than this race in my life.

Despite the official record says I am first, I told the race director I should have been second because of all the confusions with the course. I was all tensed up and started to slow down during the second half of my race because of all the confusion. I could not accept the official record as my personal best. (In fact, the race director tried to compensate the time lost due to the train track waiting and people running extra distance due to being lost. But honestly, I do not trust that result at all.)

In the end I have received an additional cotton race T-shirt and a Target gift card for running “second place” as I insisted. But there’s no Top 3 winner medals, even though age group winners got theirs. (Now I’m bummed.)

I don’t run in events often, but when I do I run Rock and Roll San Diego. There is a very enthusiastic crowd cheering every runner on which personally makes me feel like a winner everytime.
The views are beautiful ranging from green areas through Balboa Park to the city streets down town (that’s just during the half marathon). Several bands play live music throughout the run with a headliner at the finish line festival which is a great motivator to complete the race sooner than later. The hills are challenging mainly because my training area is primarily flat. The only thing I would change is the material of the free shirt given when you register. but other than the material of the shirt, the race medal and tshirt design really represents the location and/or theme of the race.

There is no race. In 2017, the organizer kept all the money but those who went complained that virtually nothing that was promised was offered — no prize money, no transports, etc. I entered in 2018, but the organizer cancelled the race while keeping all the money. He also did not answer Better Business Bureau complaints. He is registered as Sports in Motion LLC of Omaha (although there are unaffiliated companies with that same name in other states), so I would be wary of sending money to any organizer with a “Sports in Motion” website domain or contact point. (I do notice that the race website has been taken down for this race.)

Another great race by Sasquatch Racing, and carrying all the benefits of that team: a free organized practice run on the 10K course (usually about 3 to 4 weeks before the race), post-race beers and massages, nice technical tees. All in all, great race production, a nice turnout, tons of perks.

While the course here was well constructed, I just want to warn you about running in China Camp. First, the climbs are STEEP and they keep going. I mean, so steep that I couldn’t run down the hill, I had to ride the brakes the whole way. Another thing that complicates those ups and downs is that there are portions of the China Camp trails that are just rock face – I watching my footing, because I am a clumsy runner, and any fall would have resulted in some deep gashes. With all that being said, there are some nice views, the trails are all really beautiful, and while China Camp may not be my favorite location, this is still a really good race!

My headline suggests that 2016 was much better and let me explain.
Last year was my first year. Because i was one of the first to register for the race, it earned you a shirt with San Francisco embroidered on it. The jacket was awesome, but they somehow ran out of my size so i had to settle for one size larger with the embroidered, or my size with out it. Seems they should have figured it out who gets what.

Fast forward to this year, and the jacket was disappointing, the colors i gather were voted on, but i guess i thought it would be a thin layered jacket. That and there was no special embroidering for registering in the first day when it opened. They were suppose to send you a special hat, but that didn’t happen.

So starting this race i was already a bit annoyed. that along with it being hard to get to, being in San Francisco.

Leading up to the race, i wondered if it would be cancelled because of the horrible storm. Instead of cancelling it, they shortened it to a 9.8 k. They couldn’t even make it into a 10k.. What is up with that. They should have just cancelled this race and refunded the money, or figure out how to make it into a 15k or at least a 10k.

Then at the end, the medal was cool, but not as interesting as last year, and their plastic mug of treats was the exact one from the previous year. Recycling old stuff? At least, AT LEAST stamp it with the year.. If its intended to just be thrown away, don’t advertise it as a perk of the race.

Anyway, its a bit of a pain in the butt race, and i don’t think i will do it again without changes…

This is a super fun race. Teams of 8 (or 4 if you want to run double) run a total of 128 miles overnight. You get to run the cross country ski trails, so they are technical and challenging, but very beautiful. Each team sets up camp at Ragnar Village and many camps have themes. There’s always something going on – music, entertainment, food, and plenty of people watching 🙂

Our team has gone two years in a row and we’re already making plans for next year.

It’s not a cheap race – $1,500/team. I feel like it’s kind of expensive considering they don’t have aid stations on the course, and they use volunteers for a lot of the work. Swag consists of t-shirt, a really cool medal that functions as a camping tool (don’t try to carry it on an airplane), and a few granola bars and stickers, and a pasta dinner. They provide water (although they ran out both years – very dangerous!!!) and porta potties (fortunately they clean them like clockwork). Everything else is self-sufficient.

The energy is high, the people are super friendly, and the run is scenic. I highly recommend it!

This race is LITERALLY the best and worst of Vegas. Amazing bits=running by the Paris/Flamingo/Bellagio. People cheering. The VIEWS. Worst=Pot smell wafting onto large parts of the course. Homeless people cheering. (Don’t get me wrong…I was grateful…I just felt bad for them) Running by creepy Circus Circus. You definitely see the best and worst parts of the Vegas Strip. But it was EPIC.
