Fargo was my 3rd marathon. The first 2 were big city marathons with HUGE turn outs (Marine Corps and Chicago) so it was really refreshing to have small lines for the restrooms, plenty of space to move around and to cross the start line shortly after the gun went off! I also really liked having so much elbow room while running and not still being in a tight pack after 7 or more miles. The only thing I wish I would have known is that there wouldn’t be much for nutrition at the aid stations. The bigger marathons I have done have had food like bananas, Clif Bloks, etc. Fargo had Gu packets only at mile 8 and 20. Around mile 18 my stomach was growling and I worried I wouldn’t make it! I would have happily carried my own supplies had I known I needed to, but I also would have been totally happy to pay an extra $5 on my entry fee to go towards the cost of food.
I loved the support that the town shows for the race. It was really uplifting seeing so many kids offering high fives and all the families in their yards cheering for us as we passed!

This course was great. There is SO much support from all of the spectators in Chicago. It’s almost impossible not to start out to fast during the first 3 miles which weave around down town. It’s much easier to settle in to a pace when the course enters some of the northern neighborhoods. It’s such a great way to see a LOT of the city! I ran it on a very hot day, but the fire hydrants were cracked open, spectators handed out wet sponges and there were a lot of huge aid stations.
