There is a lot to love about this race. The expo has a great variety of vendors and reasonable hours. The volunteer coordination is superb, and check-in, bag drop, and on-course volunteer support at turns and aid stations are all excellent. The course is very flat, includes miles in both Fargo, ND and across the Red River in Moorhead, MN. The route touches all three beautiful university campuses in Fargo/Moorhead, includes some miles on the recreational trails along the Red River, and a quick sweep through Downtown Fargo, as well as various residential neighborhoods. There is some sort of band or musical group at virtually every mile, and fans lined up along the route cheering virtually the entire way. The weather can be a bit unpredictable this time of year; this year the temperature wasn’t bad, but there was a strong (30+ mph gusts) wind out of the north, and unfortunately miles 20-26.2 were pretty much right into the wind. Ugh! All in all, this is an amazing experience. There’s pretty much a race for everyone, 5k, 10k, half, full, plus a dog race and bike race during the week!
This was my first time running the full, but I have run the half several times. I will keep coming back for this race for years to come.

Point-to-point race starting at Two Harbors, MN and runs along Scenic Hwy 61. It’s a beautiful journey along Lake Superior with trees along the highway the whole way. There are few fans along the road the first 20+ miles because there’s no real way to access the route, so if having a lot of crowd support is important, this perhaps isn’t your race. Coming from flat-as-a-pancake eastern ND, the rolling hills were a bit of adjustment, and I wish I’d done more hill training to prepare. Also, while the lake breeze helps keep the temperature moderate, it does take place in mid-June, and it can (and did) get into the mid-to-upper 70s, so proper hydration is key. The support and food at the finish line was great, also. I would run this one again in a heartbeat. A couple other notes: Good support from the aid stations, every couple of miles at first, then every mile. The expo was the best I have ever seen, and worth visiting. A slight down-side, lodging has to be reserved months in advance and is generally expensive, with all local hotels jacking up their rates for the weekend. I loved the community support! If carbo-loading with pasta is your thing, I think just about every block within a two-mile radius of the finish line has some sort of pasta feed the day before the race. Also, it’s awesome the way random people in town notice and congratulate anyone wearing their finisher shirt or medal.
