My first marathon and I really enjoyed this race. Overall would run again and thought it was a great race experience.

Pros:
– People cheering along the entire course. Can’t go more than 200 feet during the entire race without someone cheering.
– Big race feel. Only 1.3K marathons, 8K total runners (relay, half, and marathon) with 30K spectators
– If you have spectators coming to watch, my family was able to see me 5 times – 4 times in same spot plus a quick 5min walk to the finish
– Plenty of hydration stations along the course. Many run by race but also plenty from locals with sprinklers, ice bags, water, ice pops, etc
– Views is Lake Champlain along the course were beautiful
– Lots of pacer times
– Relatively flat the whole way. 1 minor hill around mile 6 and 19 that is a gradual incline for about 1 mile
– Plenty of parking and good hotels in the area
– Big expo
– Cool medal and shirt
– Lots of bands and cheering along the way

Cons:
– Definitely not enough bathrooms. Over 1k people waiting in line for the bathroom at 6:50am for a 7:00am start. Missed my start time and had to catch up to people over the first mile
– The race is over Memorial Day weekend so weather can be hot plus need to travel for the weekend. In 2022, race started at 57 degrees at 7am, and finished around 72 degrees partially cloudy. Weekend before was in the 90s so we got lucky.
– Marathon and relays all run the same course so lots of people dodging around each other for the first few miles
– The Marathon course is two half marathon loops, so could get boring to some but I thought the energy of the crowds kept it entertaining the whole way

A really great half marathon race. The course starts by the convention hall in Asbury Park. It’s a super flat course on roads and finishes the last 5-6 miles on the boardwalk. You can see the ocean a lot of the race so a very pretty view but it does have the out/back course which can be boring to some people. Spectators were scattered along the course but very prevalent at miles 0,2,8,13. Lots of energy. Well managed race with lots of porta potties and regular bathrooms near the start. Swag was a nice dry fit long sleeve shirt and also nice quality towel for top 3 M/F in your age group. I thought this was a very fun and well organized race with opportunities for great PRs.

This race was in the middle of January so no shocker that it was covered in ice. People were slipping and sliding everywhere but that’s what you risk when signing up for a trail winter race. Anyway, beyond that this was a very pretty course through the woods. Not a huge crowd – only 53 people in my 10k but still enough around me to keep it competitive, but this was a pretty laid-back race. I did skip about 4 miles in on a downhill but was able to recover quickly. I got a short sleeve shirt swag. There were post races snacks readily available. The bathroom situation was not super ideal as there is only 1 porta potty about 1/4-1/2mile from the start but the small crowd made it not a huge line problem. Little to no spectators at the start and absolutely none on the course so a very quiet race that you get to enjoy nature. Only 1 major hill around mile 3-4.

This was my first triathlon and it was a fair experience. Started by getting there 1.5 hours before the start and plenty of sports to set up my bike in the transition area (it got much more crowded closer to the start. There were plenty of porta potties right next to the transition area. The bib line wasn’t long and the whole event was pretty organized to start. The race is in the river so nice that you don’t need to fight the waves of the ocean. Unfortunately the race does start in waves though so if you are a later wave you might wound up wadding one the cold water for a while. The bike and run sections and the same look except that you do it more times for the bike. A pretty monotonous out and back loop but I guess if you are looking for a lot of cheering you’ll pace your spectators around 5 times. The only time I didn’t think the race logistics was bad was during my run/bike transition I didn’t know which direction to start the run and actually started running the wrong way – the kids who were supposed to be directing people weren’t paying attention. Medal swag is cool. Crowd at the transition area was pretty lively but nearly none for the other 90% of the race.
