I highly recommend this race. But, if you’re not staying in Townsend, arrive at the parking area plenty early. I stayed in Maryville and thought I had given myself more than enough time. Then I hit a wall of backed-up traffic looking to get into the parking area. I got parked, got on a shuttle and got to the start point moments before my wave was called to the staging area. The lines at the port-a-johns were long. No time to pee. I got to the staging area and then withing five minutes or so was off.

I stuck to my game plan — five minutes of running followed by a minute of walking — for the first 9 miles. Then I was going to treat the rest as a four-miler. Blisters formed on the balls of my feet and it hurt to run. I walked most of miles 11 and 12. Then ran most of mile 13 into the finish and a ginormous medal. The postrace box of food was pretty good. I’m vegan and a few of the items weren’t, so I didn’t eat those.

Remember to bring your water bottle or hydration pouch to the race. Vacation Races events are cup free. Cuts down on waste and litter, which I appreciate.

All in all, I say this race was first-rate despite the traffic jam and rush from bus to start point.

I really enjoyed the Indianapolis Monumental half marathon. The course was an interesting tour through downtown Indianapolis and to its north. The race stared and finished near the state Capital building and went past the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. I had a couple of small problems with the race. The first was the lack or a vegan/vegetarian chili option for race finishers. I realize this is Indiana and most Hoosiers eat meat, but more and more endurance athletes both world class and back-of-the-packers like me are turning away from meat. I think the race should make sure there is a vegan chili option this year. My other problem had to do with traffic. I realize closing streets in to and out of downtown for hours on end can be a nightmare, but I found at times racers and cars were too close for comfort on Meridian Street as we headed back toward downtown. It would take just one frustrated driver to take his/her road rage out on a group of runners, thus ruining the race forever. Despite my complaints, I plan to return in 2016 and complete the marathon.

The scenery at the inaugural Grand Teton Half Marathon made all the glitches that came with a first-time race worth the effort. The race started in Wilson, a town west of Jackson in the Jackson Hole area. My wife and son were volunteering at the finish line handing out medals. Shuttle buses were running from various points in the Jackson Hole area to both the start and the finish line of the point-to-point race, and the drivers didn’t always know where they were going. I didn’t train as well for this race as I should have, and the altitude beat me up. There was some rise from the start to the finish, most of it on a mile-long hill somewhere around miles 9 and 10. That hill beat me up. The one glitch the organizers had no control over was road construction on one of the roads the race followed.
A couple of things I really liked about the race is that it was cupless and at the end, everyone got a prepackaged box of goodies. There was no chance of bananas being gone by the time we back-of-the-pack runners crossed the line. I’d like to see more races go cupless and have all the post-race goodies in a prepacked box.
I thoroughly enjoyed this race and I hope to someday return to Jackson Hole and run it again.
