I had last run this race in 2004, when the race did not go over the Golden Gate Bridge. The addition of the bridge made the course much harder. The two climbs to the bridge are quite steep and the descent off the bridge on the north end was a very steep, narrow dirt trail, rough, rocky and rutty. I was terrified that I would fall or be knocked over by the hordes of folks descending like maniacs around me. The bridge itself was very crowded (at slightly under 4:00 marathon pace) and full of obstacles and slippery metal plates in the pavement. By the time I got off the bridge my nerves were totally shot and I checked out at the halfway point.

The race organization was very good. The expo was in a huge building and not very crowded, easy to navigate. The starting area was clear and orderly, plenty of aid stations and volunteers. I stayed in the race hotel, the Hyatt Regency, which was expensive but very nice and really convenient to the starting line. The race scenery was spectacular. This could be a lovely race for someone who likes hills and is very agile on his/her feet, but for a clumsy flatlander like me it was a disaster.

I have run this race many times and it has always been an excellent experience. The logistics are extremely smooth from registration to packet pickup to race-day morning. It’s a nice sized race, big enough that I have people to run with the whole way but small enough that you can jump out of a porta-potty five minutes before the start and be positioned where you want to be. The course is very well marked, well protected from traffic, good pavement, not too many turns and very flat apart from one small overpass. The middle parts of the half-marathon are a little boring out in the countryside, but pleasant. Lots of helpful volunteers and friendly local people out to cheer. Well organized finish area with food, drink, and results quickly available. The race organizers do an excellent job.

Very good course for fast times. Dead flat except for one small overpass, good pavement, not too many turns. Enough runners that I was never isolated, but small enough that I didn’t have to fight through crowds. Course is well marked and well separated from traffic. Big markers at every mile. Race organization was excellent from registration to expo to race day. Lots of friendly volunteers, and many people who live along the rural parts of the course came out to watch and cheer. Finisher’s jacket was a great touch.
This is an excellent race for running fast times and having an enjoyable experience. The only down sides are the rather boring course and the lack of (much) music on the course.

Very professionally organized; expo, parking, start and finish lines were all very smooth. And every year it’s the only fairly large race I do that always has plenty of porta-potties! Lots of volunteers and aid stations. Course is completely closed to vehicles–very nice. Not very scenic, but reasonable numbers of spectators over whole course. This year there was very little music on the course, and minimal choice of post-race refreshments. The Fresno half-marathon course has one significant hill, not steep but several blocks long, that you run down and back up just past the halfway course. The race is not really special in any way, but reliably a good experience and I certainly plan to be back.
