I chose this race to check Louisiana off of my 50 in 50 list. We had a great weekend but this race had a few hiccups.

They didn’t send out any email communication, updates were only posted on Facebook. Some of the information on the website and the Facebook pages were contradictory… ex start time and packet pick up times and locations. There were a lot of comments online about the lack of communication and many people were getting upset… repeatedly you could see where the organizers would say they “never got the emails.” (In my experience people are a lot more forgiving when you own up to your mistakes)

While everyone was lining up to start the race they announced that we were no longer running the course we signed up for but instead doing two loops. Personally, I would’ve never signed up for a looped course and would’ve really appreciated them letting us know before hand. They also said the course has been changed earlier in the week but nobody in the crowd knew and it wasn’t posted anywhere. I had friends planning on cheering during the race and this goofed up their morning too.

I did really like that it was a women’s race on international women’s day plus they had plenty of restrooms and water stops

Overall, this race could grow into something much better but they have a lot of work to do.

Great small town race with a Mardi Gras theme! There were about 300 participants so it was small but you weren’t alone.

They had a race day pick up option and an 8am start time making it easy for people to come in from surrounding areas. It also let the day warm up a bit!

There were water stops and restrooms about every 1.5 miles – I wish they didn’t use styrofoam cups 🙁

We got to run along the river for part of the race and most of the race was on a bike trail

None of the regular post race snacks but they had grits and a beignet food truck to keep w the theme

The medal was fun but they rest of the swag bag didn’t offer much. There was a visor (cotton, not athletic material), a Budweiser koozie, a knob creek coffee mug, and a chip clip. Personally, I’d rather have one good thing than a bunch of junk. I love a good medal, a shirt (when it’s done right) or an athletic hat. Stickers are great too!

I plan to come back next year and stay for the parade

Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Initially I was planning to run the 10 miler but a trip to Vegas and a bunch of blisters had me drop down to the 10k.

The race was pretty much all hills so buyer beware

The weather was perfect and we had a great time

The finisher item was a pint glass and the shirts were soft, cotton long sleeves

If you make it out to this race be sure to bring $5 cash per person for park entry (the race is in the park) and if you have time definitely go see the birds of prey, the eagle, and the little farm! Oak Mountain has a ton to offer and is worth spending the day

This was my first time trail running. It was well organized and everyone seemed to have a great time. There was a 5k and a 10k option (I chose the 5k). The 10k started 30 min before the 5k and seemed to have the majority of the participants. The trail wasn’t overly difficult but was a nice challenge for me. I don’t see many trail runs in my future but we had a really great time and met some nice people – I could definitely be talked into it again next year

I ran this to check Mississippi off my 50 in 50 list. Leading up to the race I was nervous about the lack of communication and how little information was available online… they didn’t announce packet pick up until about 5 o’clock the day before – even then they only announced it on Facebook (no email and no update to the website).

The morning of the race I got there about 45 min early and no one could say exactly where the race was going to start. We asked about water stops and bathrooms and they said there were no official water stops but some would be put on by locals and if we really need to use the restroom to ask somebody if we could use theirs. Yes. You read that right. They told us to ask a stranger to go in their home to use the restroom. NO WAY.

While I waited for the start I got to know some of the other runners and we hung out in a hotel lobby close by to stay warm.
When it was about time for the start a boy came and told us there was a line spray-painted down the street for us to gather around. We were told there would be arrows on the ground for us to follow for the race course and then they blew an air horn and we were off. There were only about 60 or so people running the half and the roads were not closed to cars. At first it wasn’t too scary because we were all together but as we all spaced out it got pretty nerve-racking being on the roads. You really had to pay a lot of attention to the course and to the cars. I was taking it really slow to be careful of cars but at some point I got off course. As I was running the area around me was seeming less and less safe (collapsed buildings, boarded up homes, bars over windows and doors). I paused to gain my bearings and saw another runner just ahead of me. He and I started making our way back together and two police officers stopped to help us find our way.

I knocked out about 15.5 miles but I finished.

I do not recommend this race.

This year the St Jude marathon weekend was a little different with the convention center being under construction. Notable changes…. the expo was about 20 miles away and the pasta party was moved to the Peabody. The temporary expo location was much smaller and not as elaborate as normal but it was okay – fingers crossed it doesn’t deter people from coming back. It being so far away made for a tight window to make our hospital tour that afternoon. I hope if they’re there again next year they open earlier.

Friday afternoon we were lucky enough to have a tour of St Jude. Highly recommend!! The hospital was such a happy place filled with hope and love. The thought and detail that’s gone into every little thing will stick with you way past race day. We were already thinking we’d come back for 2020 but the tour solidified our plans.

Race day was great! The weather was overcast and gloomy but not too cold and it never really rained. The crowd support was incredible and running through the St Jude campus was unlike anything else. The families will pull out so many of your emotions and push you to keep going.
Each mile has a sponsor and spectators line almost the entire race. If your ever feeling low there’s someone around to pump you up!

The race was very crowded so I would not recommend for a pr race (if you’re a slower runner like me you’ll be weaving through people most of the time) but it’s definitely one of my favorite weekends of the year. It’s great being a part of something so special!

My husband and I got married in April and definitely want a turkey trot to be an ongoing tradition for us. This race is really close to his parents house so we all signed up and had some neighbors join us too. This race was small, flat, and very family friendly. I feel like I would’ve had a fast race if I hadn’t had food poisoning the day before…

I would love if they would have an athletic shirt rather than a cotton one and a longer distance option would be great too. Overall we enjoyed this race and plan to be back next year

This race came highly recommended but definitely fell short of our expectations. Our biggest gripe is that there were only four bathrooms at the start line with a line a mile long and there were zero during the course. With it only being a 10K I can understand not having restrooms during the race but there should’ve been more at the beginning…. 3/5

My friend and I had such a great time in 2017 we came back again! The course, expo, and swag were all still great but the host hotel was a complete disaster. I was already in town for work so we were able to get a room in a relatively reasonable amount of time (we had a room about three hours after check in) but there were people in the lobby waiting on their rooms past 11pm when they’d arrived around 4. The hotel did not keep runners grouped together but instead mixed us in with bachelor and bachelorette parties. Our room was connected to/shared a door with a bachelor party where they had a dozen guys staying in a room meant for two people…. They were screaming, yelling, then vomiting all night. I’m all for people having a good time but that ruined ours. Not planning on coming back for a third race

I loved this race so much and can’t wait to do another revel race in the future. The altitude was a challenge for me (I was living in Florida at the time) but the beautiful scenery was a perfect distraction. I took several pictures – one of my favorite memories was stopping for a few seconds to let a family of deer cross the road.
