The great things about this race include:
Free parking
Easy bag check
Warm lobby before and after the race
Great swag (a nice hoodie and coffee mug this year)
Post race chili
Large enough for a good atmosphere, but not so large that it’s a crowded course
Out & back means you get to see the leaders and any friends on the course.

The bad things about this race:
Not very scenic
Two steep hills at the end make it hard to have a final kick

Overall, I enjoy this race quite a bit, particularly because it’s in January and winter running is awesome. I try to do this one every year.

For the first 10 hours you have a 5 mile loop. For the last 2 hours they open up a 1 mile loop. The 12 hour race starts and ends in the dark, so bring a headlamp. 95% of this race is on MBX trail, with the rest on paved areas transitioning between the three main areas. The trail is great for new trail runners as it’s not technical and there are no big hills. There are hills, mind you, just not big ones. The course is beautiful, particularly for an urban trail.

One of the HUGE benefits of this race is INDOOR toilets! and a warm area to take a break if you need to. They also have an excellent aid station at the Trailhead which is the typical fare of ultra races, which means there is PLENTY to eat, including grilled cheese sandwiches, quesadillas, pancakes and bacon. There’s also a water stop on the big loop that you pass twice. You really don’t need to carry any food or water with you on the course.

The RD and his crew do a fantastic job. This is a race I will run every single year I’m able to.

I’ve run this race twice and will be doing it again in 2020. My hope is to run it every year, because it is that great!

The course is a 10 mile horse trail around Wyandotte Lake County Park (or is it Wyandott County Lake Park…I can never keep that straight). You run it once, twice, or three times depending on the race. The two years I’ve run it the course has been brutal with rivers of cold, sloppy mud, or cold slushy mud. I hear it can be dry and fast as well. Mud aside, the course is challenging though not to the point that it should scare anyone off. Some may give it a higher course difficulty rating but I’d put it right in the middle of what I’ve run.

Ben Holmes, the RD, and his band of volunteers doing a fantastic job with this race. There are four well staffed, and well stocked, aid stations on the 10 mile loop. I spend far too much time at these aid stations because the people and food there are great…and they often offer shots of fireball or other booze 😉

Post race, the chili is kick ass! They may run out of the good beer though, so run fast. Great race swag too. Love my hoodie! Unless you are in the 50K you have to take the shuttle from a church parking lot, but no worries, the parking is easy there and the shuttles swing through frequently.

If you’re looking for a great February trail race, this is it!
