If you have lived anywhere near Chicagoland, you know that April is the rainy season of the midwest. Despite my better judgement, I signed up anyway. I paid the extra $30 for the same-day VIP packet pick up. I have never felt as ripped-off as I did that morning. The pick up tent was unorganized & slow, the bag check was self-serve, despite the fact there were a couple of volunteers assigned to bag check. I understand that hosting the run “rain or shine” is to cut overhead, but there is a difference between running in 70 degree weather with occasional showers and 40 degree weather with constant precipitation. The race coordinators should have rescheduled the race. They didn’t. I gave it a try, outfitted in rain gear. I will never sign up for this again. Cold, wet & miserable was the theme of this race. The majority of the route was set in residential neighbor hoods with more-than-occasional vehicles to watch out for. The one bright point is that I got one of my better times, due to the unpleasant conditions (We’re cold & wet. RUN FASTER!). To finish up, the medal was decent, but not worth the discomfort. The Chicagoland Divas run: terrible. Never signing up for it again.

This was fantastic! I rented a house in the middle of downtown Lynchburg. The start line was literally right outside the front door, the packet picket was a three minute walk behind the house. The course was beautiful, weather was perfect- warm & overcast, but no rain. The course is on a road, which was closed for the race. Whiskey Hill was not as scary as I thought it would be, but it was still tough. The course is slightly hilly. The “Medal” ( a carved piece of barrel) is wonderful- it smells faintly of wood smoke & whiskey. Usually it’s freebies or nothing with me (there were free tech socks & a tech long-sleeve shirt. both are excellent), but I’m glad you could buy commemorative bottles of whiskey. Means you can buy as many as you like/ can afford. I got two, with laser etching. “13.1 MILES, AND ALL I GOT IS THIS EMPTY BOTTLE!” and “I RAN 13.1 MILES AND GOT JACK!”
Visiting Lynchburg makes a neat weekend vacation, as Jack Daniel’s Distillery offers tours, 7 days a week. Definitely worthwhile.
