I ran the half marathon with is a point to point race along the Gulf of Mexico from Gulfport to Biloxi. You can actually see the finish from the start. It is literally along the beach about 95% of the race. Super flat for most of the race. It was a great run. Read my attached blog post for more details.

Wow was it cold on Sunday! This was a great race, but the temperatures were in the low 30s and then a 15-20mph wind made it really cold, at least for this southern boy! The jacket and medal were awesome which made it worth it. This was my 24th state and 45th half marathon. The volunteers were outstanding considering the conditions. My biggest struggle was about the last couple of miles as they brought in a few tough hills to fight through. As a pyrotechnician, I loved the confetti cannons to start the race. That was a nice touch that I had never experienced at other races. It was nice getting a picture with the Route 66 overpass. Finally, you must check out the “Center of the Universe” when you run this race. One of the neatest things ever!

This was a small town race of about 400 runners. The course is both road and packed dirt through a lot of farm land. There are a good many rolling hills. The reason I chose this race was that they have a maple syrup pancake breakfast once you finish and the medal is made out of a piece of cut maple tree. Carry your on fluids as there are only a bare minimum of water/gatorade stops.

I have now ran this race all three years. It is now my only RunDisney race weekend, and I am still currently a legacy runner of the event, doing every race. It was awesome as always. Great course, great characters on the course, great photos. I did the Kessel Run Challenge and First Order Challenge this year. 10k, half marathon in Florida, virtual half marathon for Disneyland since they canceled the race there.

This was was my 22nd state completed. The portion of the run off the boardwalk (about 6-7 miles) was a lot of bridges and viaducts, as well as one tunnel. So don’t go into this race thinking it is flat. The last 5 miles is on the AC boardwalk, you run past the finish line at mile 11 and then come back. It got hot on the boardwalk, and there is not shade. There are walkers on the boardwalk while you are running. Nothing is blocked off just for the runners. Nice medal and good finish line goodies. Town is very nasty and did not feel too safe to walk around.

This was a small race of about 300 half marathoners, plus some marathoners. The course starts with 1 lap around the Dover International Speedway, then the remainder is through the countryside of Dover. There is only 1 incline in the last half mile, over a bridge. The expo is super tiny. Great communications. Ran out of water at the last few stops. This was my 3rd fastest half marathon, so I would say this is a super fast course.

This was my 1st time running this race. It is a simple expo at the Ridgecrest Conference Ctr. Race starts at dawn (6:01a). The first 3 miles involves some uphills, but then it happens. At least 7 miles of downhill, gravel, switch back running. So any time you lose in the uphills can be made up here. The last few miles have some more uphills, not as extreme as the first portion. Last half mile is on sidewalks and finish up at Old Fort First Baptist Church parking lot. Lots of support, water stops every 2 miles, great finish line support.

Not a bad race. Pretty flat course. Good race support on the course. Great communications, because there was a bad storm in the area prior to the race, which delayed the race 1.5 hours. They kept us informed on race start and a good race overall. I was a little slower than normal because of prior races the weekend before. Nice to run in Churchill Downs.

I am from Charleston and ran the inaugural race in 2011, and have supported others along the course in other years. Each year there is some form of issue. Running out of medals and shirts to the course not being plotted properly and running extra. However, these year seemed to go pretty well.

Just to mention, I was supposed to have run the Mississippi Blues Half Marathon the week prior and after traveling all the way to MS, the race was cancelled because of a winter storm. Well the RD of the Charleston Marathon contacted me and gave me a great discount to run the half marathon since I was cancelled. I was planning to get the half mileage in for training, so I signed up and ran the race. So that was a nice offering from them.

As for the course, only about the first 5 miles in in downtown Charleston, then you transition into North Charleston which is not as scenic. There was lots of fan support in downtown, but once we got out of downtown, it was very limited until we got to the finish area. The roads are pretty rough throughout the course, but living in Charleston I am use to it.

If you need a race in SC for a 50 states or something, it is a nice option, but I would steer you to the Kiawah Islands Half/Full instead.

This was a pretty good small race of less than 1,000 runners. Not a bad course, but the 3 miles on the limestone trail at Ritter is tight, and not much room for passing. But it is all about the finish. You finish on the Marshall University football field. They give you a football to carry across the goal line (the finish line). Good water stop spacing. Aggressive start, no spacing. They didn’t really announce the start warning, it was just fire the cannon and go! I’d recommend it if you need the state of WV.

This was a local race for me. It was on Middleton Plantation in Charleston, SC. It was a trail run on very rugged terrain. Because of Hurricane Matthew downed trees caused them to reroute the course to 3 loops of a 4.5 track (got boring). Done with friends as a training run so it was not all out effort. Water stops about ever 2 miles. Great shirt & medal. Halloween themed race, and have a halloween costume contest. I want to do it again next year with the full course back in play.

This was one doozy of a race. The altitude was no joke! First 2 miles is all uphill, 7000′ to 7332′, then the last 11 miles are downhill to 6000′. For someone from the coast of SC the mountains was a great scenery. The altitude made me take the downhill at a much slower pace that I typically run. They had aid stations every 2 miles, but most were not ready for us, had to wait for cups to fill. There was decent course entertainment, but lots of area without crowds.

I did this race is 2013. When I went to post this, it appears the website no longer works, so it may be defunct now. As a nascar fan, this was an awesome race for me. However, it was a monsoon on the day I ran it, so it was my first experience of a half in the pouring rain.

The Arthur Ravenel Bridge over the Cooper River is a beast at a severe incline. I have done it many times, even worked it as a police officer for five years. Very challenging but awesome scenery. This particular year had poor pre-race, and the race started an hour late, thus I have not run it again.

This was my first marathon. Since it is at Disney I took in the scenery and took lots of pictures. This is an amazing race for your first marathon. Do not attempt PR here (even though I did in 2014), take in everything it has to offer. I crossed the finish line and will admit I shed a tear….
